  1. Do Now: Read this slide and open the classwork section of your binders Dialectical* Journals • A Dialectical Journal is an organized method of gathering evidence and thoughts. • Similar to Graphic Organizers, DJs tend to be much more guided and ask for more specific information. • In your classwork section, recreate the DJ on the next slide (no need to color). • ALSO – TAKE OUT YOUR COPY OF LORD OF THE FLIES • *Dialectic: Investigating the truth and origins of an opinion.

  2. Using the DJ • Watch the film clip on this link. Follow along as we use Dialectic Journal to analyze one specific character (the guy in the black helmet):

  3. Vader: “No, I am your father…” Luke: “Nooooooo!” Vader: “Luke, you can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny! Join me, and together, we can rule the galaxy as father and son! Come with me. It is the only way.”

  4. Analyzing “master harold” (honors)HOMEWORK (read, by class next, to pg. 21) • As you read “Master Harold… and the boys” you must track evidence that leads to a character analysis for each character in the play. • In your classwork section, create and complete a Green/Blue T-chart similar to those used in previous classes – one for each character in the play. Find three quotes for each character that leads to an analysis of character and that character’s conflict (mix quotes to display internal and external conflicts). • Transfer the single best quote from your notes for each character to the Character Analysis Dialectic Journal handout. – complete the DJ. • So at the end of the assignment, you should have a total of nine quotes in your classwork section (three per character) and three quotes on your DJ (one per character).
