The Relationship of Herd Heritability with Sire Misidentification in Dairy Cattle
This study examines the individual herd heritabilities across a large dataset and their correlation with sire misidentification rates. Utilizing over 7 million records, we calculate heritability for various traits such as milk yield, fat and protein content, and somatic cell score. The analysis reveals that higher herd heritabilities are linked to lower sire misidentification rates, highlighting the potential of these estimates to identify herds needing DNA parent verification. This work contributes to improving sire identification practices in dairy management.
