  1. COMPUTER GENERATIONS .1st Generation(1945-1959) .2nd Generation(1959-1965) .3rd Generation(1965-1973) .4th Generation(since 1973) .5th Generation(present and beyond)

  2. 1st GENERATION(1945-1959)

  3. FEATURES .First Generation Computers used Vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory .Vacuum tubes were developed in the late 17th Century

  4. DISADVANTAGES .First Generation Computers were very large in size and occupied more space .These consumed large amount of energy .These were more costly .Vacuum tubes became hot and burn out. Due to these large rooms with air-conditioning were needed

  5. EXAMPLES .ENIAC .UNIVAC

  6. 2nd GENERATION(1959-1965)

  7. FEATURES .Transistors were replaced by vacuum tubes in the 2nd Generation Transistors were developed in 1947 .Transistors worked 40 times faster than vacuum tubes .The 2nd Generation Computers used magnetic core memory as internal storage .They had high processing speed

  8. EXAMPLES .IBM 7094 series .IBM 1400 series .CDC 164

  9. 3rd GENERATION (1965-1973)

  10. FEATURES The 3rd Generation computers used integrated circuit .They support all types of high-level programming languages .These computers were smaller in size as compared to the computer of previous generations .They consume less power and heat .They work faster than the previous computers

  11. EXAMPLES .IBM 370 .IBM SYSTEM/360 .UNIVAC 9000

  12. 4th GENERATION (Since 1973)

  13. FEATURES .Microprocessors were used in the 4th Generation computers These computers used semiconductor memory .They were smaller in size than the computers of previous Generations .These computers consume less power and generate less heat

  14. EXAMPLES .APPLE MACHINTOSH .IBM PC

  15. 5th GENERATION(present & beyond)

  16. 5th GENERATION .5th Generation computing devices are still in development stage .5th Generation devices include Laptops, i-pads, i-pods, Android phones, Tabs etc
