  1. ADAPTATIONS

  2. Most plants and animals are ADAPTED to the habitat they live in. This means that they are well suited to the place where they live.

  3. A giraffe has many features which help it to survive in its habitat. • It has a long neck which enables it to reach leaves from the tops of trees. No other animals can reach these leaves. • Its coloured fur can help to camouflage it from other animals.

  4. Camels live in the DESERT. There are many ways in which they are adapted to their HABITAT. • They have large flat feet to stop them from sinking into the sand. • They have a HUMP on their backs. This is where they can store food. • They can drink up to 120 LITRES of water in one go - this means that they do not need to drink very often. • They have long eyelashes to keep sand out of their eyes.

  5. An owl’s habitat is WOODLAND. It is a PREDATOR. It is ADAPTED to the woodland by having: • Excellent hearing. • Large eyes - useful for hunting at night. • A sharp beak and claws - useful for catching prey. • Light bones and feathers.

  6. Cacti are found in hot places. They are ADAPTED to their habitat because they have: • Thick stems which can store a lot of water. • No leaves - this reduces water loss. • A waxy outer layer to stop water evaporating. • Long roots to collect as much water as possible. • Spines to prevent animals from eating them.

  7. QUESTIONS • What is a HABITAT? • What does ADAPTATION mean? • What does CAMOUFLAGE mean? • Choose 2 of the plants and animals that you have just seen, describe their HABITAT, and write down how they are ADAPTED to where they live. • Think of 2 other animals and describe how they are adapted to their habitats.
