  1. Violence In Society • Assault-a physical attack or the threat of an attack for the purpose of inflicting bodily injury. • 2510 aggravated assaults take place each day. • Rape-forced sexual intercourse. • 224 rapes committed each day.

  2. Violence In Society • Homicide-violent crime resulting in death. • 43 people die of homicide each day. • Robbery-theft by force with a weapon. • 1122 armed robberies occur each day.

  3. Teens And Violence • One-fourth of all violent crimes in the US are committed under the age of 18. • Homicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for people aged 15-24.

  4. Causes Of Violence • Prejudice/hate crime-illegal act against someone just because he/she is a member of a particular group. • Weapons-easy access. • Peer pressure-wanting to show loyalty to or be accepted by a group, may cause a person to go against their values. • Alcohol and drugs-responsible for ½ of all crimes.

Gangs • Gangs-group of people who associate with each other because they have something in common. • Usually have strict rules such as; • Members can only hang with gang. • They use signals, nicknames and terms. • They wear certain colors or styles. • Tattoos tell stories or where they are from.

  6. Gangs • Why do people join gangs? • They are lonely. • Peer pressure • To gain respect, power and friends. • Protection from other gangs. • Gang life is glorified in movies and music.

Violence Protection • Protect yourself • Don’t look like an easy target. • Don’t use drugs or alcohol as the reduce your ability to protect yourself. • If someone bothers you look them in the eye and say “leave me alone” firmly. • If attacked get away any way possible. • If they demand money, jewelry, ect. throw it away from you and run the opposite way.

Safety On The Street And At Home • At night, walk in lighted areas, avoid alleys and walking alone if possible. • If you think someone is following you go into a public place, do not go home. • Do not hitchhike or accept rides from strangers. • Have your keys ready when you reach your front door or car.

  9. Safety On The Street And At Home • At home, keep the doors and windows locked. • Do not open the door for someone you do not know. • Do not tell unknown callers that you are home alone. • Do not give out any personal information over the phone.

Bullies • Bully-someone who uses threats, taunts or violence to intimidate people who appear helpless. • What to do if bullied • Stay calm • Do something unexpected to divert their attention. • Use humor • Apologize and walk away. • Give the person a way out and let them save face. • Try to be empathetic.

  12. Bullies • What not to do if bullied. • Let the other person force a fight. • Let your emotions get the best of you. • Try to even the score. • Tease, be hostile, threaten or insult.

  13. Stopping Violence In Communities • More police • Neighborhood watch-crime prevention by residence. • After school programs. • Improved lighting in parks and playgrounds. • Tougher laws.

  14. Gangs • How to stay clear of gangs. • Use refusal skills. • Don’t hang out with gang members. • Resist pressure to do illegal activities.
