  2. Why is it a Social issue? • Objective – people feel unsafe because… • Subjective – statistics • Rape occurs every 6 minutes • Every 35 seconds someone tries to assault someone else • Every 34 minutes an American dies from an assault attack

  3. Individual vs Group Violence • Individual- one person starting a fight or destroying property • Group Violence: • Situational: basketball game • Organized: terrorism, KKK • Institutional: army, FBI, SWAT

  4. Types of Murder • Mass Murder: killing multiple people in one event • Serial Murder: killing multiple people over the course of two or three different events • Manslaughter: unlawful, unintentional killing • Reasons: • Passion: someone you know • Poverty: less to lose • Manliness: honor

  5. Social Patterns: Murder • Least likely to be committed by stranger • Most likely to be solved • Murderers tend to be: • Less wealthy • Male • Younger • 1 in 30 Afr. Am. Males are murdered, 1 in 179 Caucasian • IntrAracial: whites kill whites and blacks kill blacks

  6. Rape • Types: • Statutory • Date • Acquantance • Reasons: • Political power: dominance • Assert masculinity: hate women, fantasizes self • Sadist: likes violence, sees opportunity • Date/Significant Other: pay back, owed

  7. Society FAIL • Many rapists never prosecuted because victims are • Embarrassment • Faulted • Lying

  8. Family Violence • Battered Child Syndrome • Battered Wife Syndrom • Elder Abuse

  9. Political Point of View • Liberal – people tend to be non-violent unless their social environment encourages antisocial behavior. Communities lack economic opportunities so that encourages crime • Conservative – Tendency toward violence is human nature which society must control. Weakening of families and religious ties means less moral education and rise of violence.

  10. Solution of Problem • Tougher law enforcement • Aggressive policing brings down crime rate but does it make police think they have too much power? • Brings down fear of crime but brings up fear of police

Examples and Solutions • What are some examples of the most recent types of violence we fear as a community? • What are some ways local or state law enforcement can correct these? • Which cause or causes of violence do you think are most prevalent?
