Sponges, classified under the Phylum Porifera, are simple multicellular animals characterized by their aquatic habitat and unique feeding mechanisms. They are heterotrophic and do not possess cell walls, relying on specialized cells for functionality. Sponges play a critical role in aquatic ecosystems by providing habitats for marine animals and engaging in symbiotic relationships with photosynthetic organisms. With a filter-feeding system, they maintain homeostasis through water circulation, while their sexual and asexual reproduction ensures continuity. Despite lacking a nervous system, they can produce toxins for defense.

  1. Phylum Porifera SPONGES Sponges are classified as animals because they are multicellular, heterotrophic, have no cell walls, and contain a few specialized cells.

  2. Environment • Aquatic Ecosystem • Provide habitats for other marine animals • Commensalism /mutualism – form partnerships with photosynthetic bacteria, algae, and protists that provide food and oxygen Food Source • Filter Feeders • Digestion is intracellular

  3. Maintaining Homeostasis - Internal (Circulation, Respiration, Excretion) • Water moving through a sponge carries out body functions – carries nutrients and dissolved oxygen, removes wastes. Maintaining Homeostasis - External (Response) • No nervous system • Many make toxins to protect themselves

  4. Movement • Larva – carried by currents before they settle on ocean floor • Adult Sponges are sessile (do not move) Reproduction • Sexually or Asexually • Internal Fertilization Evolutionary Milestone • Multicellularity

  5. Vocabulary: • Internal Fertilization p666 • Larva p666 • Page 665 Figure 26-8 or picture below:
