  3. Map Scales Map scale is the extent of reduction required to display a portion of the Earth’s surface on a map Scale determines the informational content and size of the area being represented

  4. Map Scales 1:25,000 Scale 1:50,000 Scale 1:100,000 Scale 1:250,000 Scale The smaller the number on the bottom, the larger the scale of the map

  5. Map Scales Small Scale Map Maps that have a scale of 1:1,000,000 and smaller. These maps are used for general planning The standardsmall scale map is 1:1,000,000

  6. Map Scales Medium Scale Map Are maps of scales that are larger than 1:1,000,000 but smaller than 1:75,000. These maps are used for planning operations, including the movement and concentration of marines and supplies The standardmedium scale map is 1:250,000

  7. Map Scales Large Scale Map Are maps that are larger than 75,000. They are used to meet tactical, technical, and administrative needs of the field units. The standardmedium scale map is 1:50,000

  8. Map Scales Example of Scales 1:24,000 ---> 1 inch represents about 2000 feet 1:100,000 --> 1 inch represents about 1.6 miles 1:250,000 --> 1 inch represents about 4 miles
