  4. The Governor • Qualifications • Thirty years of age • U.S. citizen • Resident of Texas for five years • Generally white, Protestant, conservative males • Exceptions: Miriam (“Ma”) Ferguson and Ann Richards • Only three Republicans since 1876: Bill Clements, George W. Bush and Rick Perry

  5. Election and Term of Office • The governor is elected to a four-year term (since 1974) • There is no constitutional limit on the number of terms; but there is a traditional limit of two terms. • Elections coincide with national midterm elections.

  6. Campaigns • Ann Richards and Clayton Williams spent approximately $31 million in the 1990 election. • In 2002, Rich Perry spent $24 million in a campaign to defeat Tony Sanchez, who spent $64 million.

  7. Removal of a Governor • Impeachment • Governor James (“Pa”) Ferguson • Succession • Lieutenant governor succeeds the governor in case of death, resignation, impeachment and conviction, or absence from the state.
