  1. Adaptations Aim: I can explain the adaptations that organisms have which enable them to survive in their habitat. I can take on a responsibility in a group, and make a contribution. Starter: What 4 things do we need to survive? Food, Water, Mates, Shelter

  2. How will I know I have achieved the objectives? • I can state the meaning of the term adaptation • I can give examples of how animals and plants are adapted to their environment. • I can investigate whether penguins huddling together is an effective behavioural adaptation. How confident are you about achieving each of these?

  3. I can state the meaning of the term adaptation 3 mins Each of these pictures shows an adaptation use the pictures to write down a definition of what adaptation means. Think in Ink Finished early? Can you name any more adaptations? Write down some organisms that have adaptations you have named.

  4. What does adaptationmean? Organisms need to have special features which help them to survive in their habitat. Adaptation means: Changes in our body or behaviour to help us survive in our habitat. Your fingers are an excellent adaptation. Without their ability to grip you would not be able to do all of that schoolwork! Without your thumb, how could your play your play station or hold a pen?

  5. Camel Adaptations Listen to this song and list any camel adaptations you hear.

  6. Camel Adaptations Camel Adaptations • Large pads on feet and chest for grip and decrease pressure to prevent sinking into the sand. • 400lbs storage capacity on back for long term water and fat stores. • Long and double layered eye lashes to prevent sand getting into their eyes. • Thick lips that allow them to eat thorns and scrubs. • Sources water from concentrates in cacti. • Fur for insulation during cold desert nights. • ...combined with efficient body temperature regulation to prevent sweating and subsequent dehydration. How many out of the 7 did you identify?

  7. What is the difference between physical and behavioral adaptations? Draw the table below into your books. You must work in your teams to decide what type of adaptations the words below belong to. 5 mins Tails Nocturnal Huddling Penguins Hibernating Fur Teeth Dancing for Mates Claws

  8. Confidence Check Show from 1-5 on how confident you are on each success criteria. 1 is not at all confident, 5 is super confident Success Criteria • I can state the meaning of the term adaptation

  9. 2. I can give examples of how animals and plants are adapted to their environment. These organisms are all adapted to their environments in different ways. Discuss in pairs how they are specially adapted to survive? 4 mins

  10. Confidence Check Show from 1-5 on how confident you are on each success criteria. 1 is not at all confident, 5 is super confident Success Criteria 2. I can investigate whether penguins huddling together is an effective behavioural adaptation.

  11. 3. I can investigate whether penguins huddling together is an effective behavioural adaptation. Think about the following questions when watching this video: Why do penguins huddle? Do you think this is a physical or behavioural adaptation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRX2JtKFUzk

  12. Confidence Check Show from 1-5 on how confident you are on each success criteria. 1 is not at all confident, 5 is super confident Success Criteria 3. I can investigate whether penguins huddling together is an effective behavioural adaptation.

  13. Adaptations activity

  14. Which habitat?

  15. Which land habitat?

  16. Which water habitat?

  17. A new species… Scientists have discovered this strange new species on a small island off the coast of Argentina. The scientists want you to help them describe: 1. Where this animal lives 2. What it eats 3. How it eats 4. How it breathes 5. How it moves 6. What they should call it. As the organism is adapted to its environment you should be able to use the way it looks to answer all of these questions. Don’t forget to give your organism a name!

  18. Camel Adaptations List as many adaptations as possible. You will here the song twice.

  19.
