UNJAM 2025: Transforming Urban Mobility in the Charlottesville-Albemarle Area

The UNJAM 2025 initiative reimagines transportation strategies in the United Jefferson Area by focusing on moving people instead of cars. Many streets are already at capacity for vehicles, but our existing streets can accommodate more pedestrians and cyclists without expansion. By implementing bus priority lanes and maximizing the use of sidewalks and bike lanes, we can enhance mobility and increase efficiency. This approach not only addresses current congestion but also promotes sustainable transit options at affordable costs, ensuring a better quality of life for all residents.

  3. A street full of cars • Many streets and highways are at capacity, can’t fit more cars, and can’t be widened.

  4. A street full of people • If we think in terms of moving people, not cars, existing streets have plenty of room for more.

  5. Bus priority lanes • Saving a lane for buses would increase the capacity of our streets - without widening.

  6. Filling the bike lanes and sidewalks • People walking and biking fill just a fraction of existing sidewalk and bike lane capacity.

  7. Why invest in transit? It’s the best way to maximize capacity of existing roadways – at affordable costs
