  1. Civil War Battles Part One of Three Standard 4.3 E.Q. What were the key battles at the beginning of the Civil War?

Fort Sumter (April 12 – 13, 1861) • First conflict of the Civil War • Cast • President Lincoln: President of the Union • President Jefferson Davis: President of the Confederacy • Major Anderson: Commander of Fort Sumter • Major Beauregard: Commander of the Confederate army near Fort Sumter. • Where is Fort Sumter located?

Fort Sumter • Major Anderson needed food and supplies • Only had enough food for four to six weeks. • President Lincoln had two choices: • The north supported to send provisions but not troops. • If he ordered the fort to evacuate, he would be treating the confederacy as a real nation. • Lincoln decides to send “food for hungry men” • Not to anger republicans or slave states.

In Jefferson ball Park… • Two choices for Jefferson: • If he did nothing it would damage the image of the Confederacy. • IF he attacked he would turn peaceful secession into war. • Jefferson would decide to attack if Major Anderson didn’t surrender. • Wouldn’t surrender, the south would shot the first bullet. • No causalities occurred. • The south would gain Fort Sumter (South the winner) • As a result of this conflict: Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina would secede.

  5. 1st Battle of Bull Run (July 21, 1861) • First battle of the Civil War • General McDowell: Union • General Beauregard/Jackson: Confederacy • At first the Union had the upper hand. • Then “Stonewall” Jackson stepped in with General Beauregard and scattered the Union army. • Would boost confidence of the South • South won the battle, even with the numbers and resources disadvantage.

  6. Fort Henry (February 6, 1862)Fort Donelson (February 11 – 16, 1862) • Cast • General Grant • Grant characteristics • Insane (tricky tacticians)/flexible military mind. • Excessive drinker • Unkempt dresser.

  7. Fort Henry/Donelson • Ironclad Ships • North: Monitor • South: Merrimack • Grant would combine both land and water tactics to control the upper MS River. • The Confederacy would never recover its strategic advantage in the West after the loss. • Victory: The Union.
