  1. The Moon Earth’s Buddy

  2. What is a Moon? • A Moon is a natural satellite that revolves around a planet.

  3. How does the Moon move? • Earth’s moon revolves and rotates at the same speed, this is why we only see one side of the moon from Earth.

  4. The Moon’s Orbit • The moon’s orbit is an ellipse. • Perigee- moon is closest to earth • Apogee- moon is farthest from earth

  5. Why does the Moon Change Shape? • Phases: How much of the lighted side of the moon you can see. • Lasts about 29.5 days

  6. Starts with a New Moon (No moon)

  7. Waxing Crescent • Waxing= growing • Crescent= less then half of the lighted side is visible

  8. First Quarter • You can see half of the lighted side

  9. Waxing Gibbous • Gibbous= You can see more then half of the lighted side of the moon

  10. Full Moon You can see the entire lighted side

  11. Waning Gibbous • Waning- lighted side of the moon is shrinking

  12. Last Quarter

  13. Waning Crescent

  14. What causes tides? • Gravity from the moon pulls on the Earth. • Tides occur mainly because of differences in how much the moon pulls on different parts of the Earth

  15. What are the different parts of a Shadow? • Umbra: Dark part (direct) of a shadow • Penumbra: Lighter (indirect) part of a shadow.

  16. Solar Eclipses • The moons shadow hits the Earth

  17. Lunar Eclipses • When the moon is in the Earth's shadow

  18. More about Eclipses! • Eclipses can only occur during a full moon. • Eclipses are rare because the moons orbit is tilted compared to Earth

  19. Next Eclipses • Next Solar Eclipses: May 20th, 2012 and November 13th, 2012 • Next Lunar Eclipse: June 4th, 2012

  20. The Earths Moon • Gravity is 1/6th that of Earth • Diameter is 3476km (that is 1/4th the size of earth, about the length of the United States) • 1/80th the density of Earth (that’s light)

  21. Features on the Moon • Craters: holes or pits created from meteors • Maria: Originally thought to be seas, but are actually low dry areas that were flooded by molten material. • Highlands: high areas of the moon

  22. How did we get our moon? • Collision Theory • An object about the size of Mars crashed into Earth. This broke off a piece of Earth and a piece of its self. The two pieces orbited around Earth and eventually connected and formed into a sphere.

  23. Going to the moon… • 1964-1972: US and Soviet Union sent a ton of Rockets to the moon • Discovered it was solid

  24. Apollo 11 • July 1969 • Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Micheal Collins traveled to the moon. • Armstrong and Buzz were the first two men to walk on the moon. • They brought back samples to study
