3. Test from Friday –Question One • Your assignment is to write a well written paragraph about Roger in “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes. You must include a direct quote in your body paragraph that supports your idea. Write on your own paper or on the back. • Paragraph Format: • Topic sentence Write a sentence that tells how Roger is characterized at the beginning of the story and at the end. . • example: Roger is a ___________person at the beginning of the story and changes to a ________ person at the end. • Supporting details: Tell the reader what the theme is and then discuss how Roger was a dynamic character. Describe his change from the beginning to the end and discuss your evidence from the text. Include one quote from the story. Make sure you document the quote by putting quote marks around the part you copy from the story. • Concluding Sentence: Rewrite the topic sentence

6. Example One This is a story about a boy named Roger. In the beginning of the story he steals a lady’s pocketbook, but she beats him up. Then she takes him home and feeds him and washes him. She gives him 10 dollars for blue suede shoes. She let him go and before he could say thank you she shut the door. Does this answer the question?

7. Example Two Roger is dirty, hungry, and weak in the beginning. In the end of the story he becomes clean, full, and trustworthy. Mrs. Jones kicked Roger’s butt and asked Roger “aint you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?” This shows that Mrs. Jones was a good, caring woman. She helped a dirty, hungry, and weak boy. Does this answer the question

8. Example Three Roger changes from a dirty, dishonest, thief at the beginning of the story to  boy who knows right from wrong. Roger was a dynamic character because of this change. The theme of "Thank You Ma'm" is that forgiveness can change a person. This theme is shown through Roger’s change. At the beginning of the story Roger tries to steal a woman's pocketbook, but this woman, Ms. Jones, takes the boy home and works to make him a better person. Ms. Jones said "I got a right mind to teach you right from wrong." This shows that she took time to make sure that he would leave her home and be a better person. Ms. Jones changed Roger from a thief to a respectable young man.  Does this answer the question?

13. Opinion I think that the ocean is more fun than a lake. Oceans are more fun because you can build sand castles by the beach and you can go surfing in the water. You can’t do either of those things at a lake. Tell the reader what you think

14. Persuade Art class should be longer than all other specials. There never seems to be enough time to get our pictures done. If we had more time in art class everyone would do a better job on their pictures and we would learn more. Art is very important and we should have the time we need to finish a project. Convince the reader to think or act a certain way

15. Inform or Explain Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is really easy. First, gather your ingredients (bread, peanut butter, jelly) and two knives. Spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread and your jelly on the other. Put the bread together and enjoy! Teach the reader something

16. Entertain Once upon a time there was a little boy who loved to play soccer. He would run as fast as he could to the ball, but every time he got there and tried to kick it he would miss. He started to think he wasn't very good at soccer, but he didn't give up. His hard work paid off and one day he scored the winning goal for his team. Provide entertainment to the reader
