  2. *What is Lupus?!* • Lupus- Chronic Autoimmune disease that attacks the body. • Flares and Remissions. (ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN.) • Not contagious • Immune system is overactive.

  3. Autoimmunity of Lupus • Body cannot identify alien invaders from domestic tissue • The body creates too many antibodies • Attacks the healthy tissue

  4. Symptoms • Fatigue • Joint and Muscle Pain- common • Skin Issues- Rashes and Sores- common • Sensitivity to Light • Headaches • Heart Issues- Paracarditis • Lung Issues- pleurisy • Mental Issues-anxiety and depression • Fever- common • Weight Loss • Hair Loss • Swollen Glands • Anemia • Raynaud's Phenomenon-Small vessels under skin turn red white or blue, areas feel numb and cold • Vasculitis • Swelling of Distal Limbs- common

  5. Treatments • Initial Treatment(Mild Lupus) • Avoid sun • Corticosteroid Cream/Oral • Anti-inflammatory Drugs • Antimalarial Drugs • Severe Case Treatment • Higher dose of Corticosteroids • Immunosuppressant's

  6. Additional info. • People with Lupus have great risk for heart attacks and strokes • Not related to Cancer • Strikes mostly women of child-bearing age • 16,000+ cases reported annually across the U.S. • Extremely challenging to diagnose
