  1. Long Range Planning Your chance to dream!

  2. RPL Long Range Plan There are seven categories: • Facilities and infrastructure • Personnel • Services and Collections • Technology • Policies, Plans and Procedures • Public Relations • Finance

  3. Public Relations A. Stay committed to high quality, responsive public service as the most effective element in public relations efforts. B. Increase efforts to market the library and its services, programs and collections 1. Develop video spots and print materials that effectively convey the variety and quality of Library services by December, 2008 2. Seek outside funding to finance the creation and dissemination of the new marketing tools. 3. Develop genre information flyers and bookmarks by September, 2007. 4. Plan ground-breaking grand opening ceremonies for the new Hineston and Glenmora branches and for the regional library 5. Add local politicians to the Library’s mailing lists for programs, events, etc.

  4. Your chance to dream! • Just because we want you to outline, it doesn’t mean that we do not want your ideas, musings and dreams! • Just take a goal and make an “A”, “B” and “C”. • A will be a “maintain” goal with sub-goals • B will be an “accomplish by” goal with sub-goals • C will be an “I wish we could…” with sub-goals

  5. Dare to dream! When you are thinking, consider this: • Details • “Maintenance” goals OR • “Accomplish by” goals with dates • Desires ($1,000 and up) • “Accomplish by” goals with dates! • Dreams ($10,000 and up) • Put these in the “I wish we could” C section.

  6. Let’s consider… How can we incorporate our own goals within those seven categories? I. Facilities and infrastructure • Personnel • Services and Collections • Technology • Policies, Plans and Procedures • Public Relations • Finance • Other

  7. Goals and Objectives for Branches • Create a pleasant atmosphere for customers • Greet customers as they enter, by name if possible. Public Relations is everybody’s job! The library is a tax-supported institution and every vote counts! • Attend to customer’s needs in a cordial, efficient manner. • Wear your name tag. Maintain a pleasant attitude with all you meet. In most instances, you ARE the library to them. • Promote the library in every setting and at every opportunity. The library provides some promotional items, such as bookmarks, for distribution to the public. • Decorate the branch appropriate to the season.

  8. Your Long Range Plan is a Roadmap for the Future! • Your Long Range Plan is really two documents: • Parts of it will get incorporated into the Library’s Long Range Plan • Parts of it will be your guideline for the next year… using it, you can evaluate how you are doing. • Remember to check it regularly to see how you are coming along, and don’t forget to toot your horn when you accomplish a goal!

  9. Now What? • You know how to outline. • You know how to use good grammar. • BUT, a good idea is BETTER than good grammar! Dare to dream, and write it down! • You know your branch or department better than anyone else!

  10. Go Forth… And Conquer! • Good news: These are due to Laura-Ellen by April 15th… you have 3 whole weeks! • Bad news: These are due to Laura-Ellen by April 15th… you only have 3 weeks!
