  1. Catalyst • Set up your Cornell notes by: • Putting the heading (Metric Conversions) at the top left • Gluing the notes on the right side. • Answer the catalyst questions on your notes

  2. Objectives SWBAT: • Articulate six different prefixes scientists use with standard units. • Convert between various units through practice.

  3. Agenda • Catalyst • Metric system basics • Converting between units • Practice • Summary

  4. Metric System Basics Units get smaller Units get larger

  5. Metric System Basics • The three prefixes that we will use the most are: • kilo • centi • milli

  6. Metric System Basics • If you needed to measure length you would choose meter as your base unit • Length of a tree branch • 1.5 meters • Length of a room • 5 meters • Length of a ball of twine stretched out • 25 meters

  7. Metric System Converting • But what if you need to measure a longer distance, like from your house to school? • Let’s say you live approximately 10 miles from school • 10 miles = 16093 meters • 16093 is a big number, but what if you could add a prefixonto the base unit to make it easier to manage: • 16093 meters = 16.093 kilometers

  8. Metric System Converting • These prefixes are based on powers of 10. What does this mean? • From each prefix every “step” is either: • 10 times larger or • 10 times smaller • For example • Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters • 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters

  9. Metric System Converting • Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters so it takes more millimeters for the same length 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters Example not to scale 40 41 40 41 1 cm

  10. Metric System Converting • An easy way to move within the metric system is by moving the decimal point one place for each “step” desired Example: change meters to centimeters • 1.00 meter = 100. centimeters

  11. Metric System Converting • If you move to the left in the diagram, move the decimal to the left • If you move to the right in the diagram, move the decimal to the right

  12. Metric System Converting • Now let’s try our previous example from meters to kilometers: 16093 meters = _________km • So for every “step” from the base unit to kilo, we move the decimal 1 place in that direction

  13. Metric System Converting • How many steps are there from meters to kilometers? 3 steps!

  14. Metric System Converting • In which direction are we moving? To the left

  15. Metric System Converting 16093 meters = _________km • We are moving 3 steps to the left 16093 m Where is the decimal to start with?

  16. Metric System Converting 16093 meters = _________km • We are moving 3 steps to the left 16093. Where is the decimal to start with?

  17. Metric System Converting 16093 meters = _________km • We are moving 3 steps to the left 16093.

  18. Metric System Converting 16093 meters = _________km • We are moving 3 steps to the left 16.093

  19. Metric System Converting • 16093 m = 16.093 km

  20. Metric System Converting • Now let’s start from centigrams and convert to kilograms 400000 centigrams = ________ kilograms

  21. Metric System Converting • How many steps are there from centigrams to kilograms? 5 steps!

  22. Metric System Converting • In which direction are we moving? To the left

  23. Metric System Converting 400000 cg = ________ kg • We are moving 5 steps to the left 400000 Where is the decimal to start with?

  24. Metric System Converting 400000 cg = ________ kg • We are moving 5 steps to the left 400000. Where is the decimal to start with?

  25. Metric System Converting 400000 cg = ________ kg • We are moving 5 steps to the left 400000.

  26. Metric System Converting 400000 cg = ________ kg • We are moving 5 steps to the left 4.00000

  27. Metric System Converting • 400000 cg = 4.00000 kg • OR • 400000 cg = 4 kg

  28. Metric System Converting • Now let’s start from meters and convert to centimeters 5 m = ____cm

  29. Metric System Converting • How many steps and in which direction are we moving? m cm 2 steps to the right!

  30. Metric System Converting 2 steps to the right! 5. What do we do now?

  31. Metric System Converting 2 steps to the right! 5. We add zeros when there is an empty space

  32. Metric System Converting 2 steps to the right! 5.00 We add zeros when there is an empty space

  33. Metric System Converting 2 steps to the right! 500.

  34. Metric System Converting • 5m = 500. cm • OR • 5m = 500 cm

  35. NOW YOU TRY In your notebook complete the following problems: 125 s = _____ ms 324 dl = _____ kl 65.4 mm = _____ m 2.3 Ds = _____ ms

  36. 3 steps to the right 125 s = _____ ms 125 s = 125000ms

  37. 4 steps to the left 324 dl = _____ kl 324 dl = .0324 kl

  38. 3 steps to the left 65.4 mm = _____ m 65.4 mm = .0654 m

  39. 4 steps to the right 2.3 Ds = _____ ms 2.3 Ds = 23000ms

  40. Summary/Questions Take 4 minutes to write your summary for today and then questions and headings on the left side of the notes. Questions to answer in your summary: • How are the prefixes setup? • How do you convert between units?
