  3. usRAP Objectives • Reduce death and serious injury on U.S. roads which can be addressed by practical road improvement measures • Ensure that assessment of risk lies at the heart of strategic road improvement decisions

  4. Data Statewide System: • Crash data for 2000 - 2004 State Trunkline System: • Road type (i.e., two-lane, multilane undivided, multilane divided, freeway) • Section length • Traffic volume

  5. Local Data Two Michigan Counties: • Crash and road data as noted above • Sampling of data for RPS ratings This data allowed the research team to develop the following statewide risk maps

  6. What’s Next • Include 2005 crash data to generate new maps • Participate in field reviews of “black roads” with Midwest Research Institute • Develop additional maps • Furnish safety project information to facilitate “performance tracking”

  7. Value to a State DOT • Help highway safety professionals focus on troublesome segments • Communicate opportunities to improve safety • Improve communications with the public

  8. Observations • Was this a worthwhile exercise? • Would we recommend that other states participate in usRAP?
