  1. Emily Dickinson Punctuation Katie Holcomb ENG 102 Ballinger 25 July 2017 Dickinson's Riddle Emily Dickinson died before her works were attempted to be analyzed and interpreted, "suggesting perhaps that the mysteries, abstractions, and double meanings were for her own enjoyment, and all answers–if there were any–died with her" ("Explanation"). Glimpsing at just a few of Dickinson's poems is sure to catch the eye of a reader, posing questions of grammatical soundness. Capital letters, dots, and dashes appear consistently, but maybe there is a reason behind it all. Emily Dickinson uses punctuation in a non–traditional way throughout her poems, contributing to the effect and meaning of her works, such as "My Life had stood?a Loaded Gun?," "After great pain, a formal feeling comes?," and "Wild Nights?Wild Nights!" Emily Dickinson employs commonly used punctuation marks in an uncommon way, riddling many of her poems. "Emily Dickinson's poems, like inlay, tend to be made of splinters of thought and sight, often brilliant fragments, held together by a mosaic sense of pattern, joined irregularly by dashes" (Wilner). Although dashes appear the most, some works also contain explanation marks. Exclamation marks in Dickinson's poems suggest strong feeling in her thoughts, interjecting passion and excitement throughout. The punctuation used by the author enhances her works and helps to draw in her audience. Dickinson's "My Life had stood? a Loaded Gun?" contains en dashes from beginning to end, giving more meaning ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  2. Paul D's Punctuation Analysis At first glance, the thing that may strike a reader most about this passage is the seemingly overuse of punctuation. Paul D is contemplating how risky Sethe's love for her daughter is, turning ideas over and over in his head. The overuse of commas and a semicolon make the reader pause, consider what is written, Perhaps Paul D does not want to feel the way he does, perhaps he is considering if these thoughts are something he should voice to Sethe, perhaps he simply takes time to think. Regardless, the punctuation draws on the reader. Further, the passage is very telling of Paul D's character. Paul D thinks 'the best thing [... is] to love just a little bit; everything, just a little bit,' showing that he is used to fleeting hopes. He would ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  3. Lewis Thomas Notes On Puncuation Summary In "Notes on Punctuation" Lewis Thomas states the different forms of punctuation used in writing. Through this excerpt, the writer Lewis Thomas uses different figurative devices in order to portray a sense of humor while explaining the usage of punctuation. Lewis's develops the idea of when and how to know when to use the different types of punctuation. These punctuations are used in different ways depending on the tone or to let the reader know when to pause or stop. Each writing style uses these punctuations at varies times, depending on the style. Also, he explains why he believes that "The commas are the most useful and usable of all the stops." 4. Punctuation In The Road Margaret Petrozza Professor Robin Russel 1 August 2016 The Road McCarthy does avoid the traditional rules of punctuation and grammar in writing The Road. His motivation could be to display the bleak and depressing mood that carries throughout the novel. Perhaps he is using this lack of punctuation and "rule–following" to impress upon the reader what matters and doesn't matter in this world he has created. The father and son go for long periods without speaking to another human, there are no birds, and there is a lack of trust amongst these remaining humans. Does punctuation really matter? This is done to challenge our thinking about what really matters to us. Perhaps he didn't see commas and apostrophes as that essential in telling his story....show more content... The way the father speaks of the boy is filled with religious overtones. He says things like: "If he is not the word of God, then God never spoke" (page 5). The boy is a symbol of God. He is the hope for humanity. The boy also gives a sense of faith to the readers, because in him we see that humanity is not totally depraved. There is still goodness. In the boy we see this goodness as well as his innocence. He gives food to the old man on the side of the road, something that we might not even do today. But in a post–apocalyptic setting, this is unheard of and humanity at its best. In a word, there is hope for a better world. There is a powerful imagery of "carrying the flame." This, too, is a symbol of hope. Because of the boy, the father is able to move on and endure. He is his hope. After the father dies, the boy is that flame. The son's act of faith in confronting the man with the shotgun leads to his and humanity's salvation––although, technically, the ending is open–ended and salvation is implicit. Even though there is not a typical beginning, middle and end, through the use of flashbacks, McCarthy is able to provide key information that lets us know how everything happened. By the end of the novel, we know how it all began, how the mother left the picture, and how they have been struggling. We get the entire picture anyway, but not telling it in a classical condition puts us in the shoes of the father himself. All he is left ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  5. Semicolons By Dolnick: A Punctuation Mark Before reading the article, it never occurred to me that anybody would want to write a whole article about a punctuation mark, but now I see how even a simple mark can hold a lot of meaning. Dolnick subtly teaches us about semicolons by mixing facts into personal stories and experiences that he has had with the punctuation. I never believed that reading about something so mundane could interest me, but Dolnick discusses semicolons in an engaging way which makes me reconsider what I previously thought about semicolons. Although the article may teach us about semicolons through some of its stories, it focuses more on Dolnick's own experiences than on actual grammatical rules or examples. Instead of writing about how we should use a semicolon, ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  6. Punctuation Flaws As many of my teachers have enjoyed preaching for the last three and a half years, one of the biggest purposes of high school is to prepare students for college. Typically, teachers use middle school and junior high to prepare students for high school, high school to prepare them for college and college to help students strengthen themselves for life and the workforce. In my final semester of highschool, I have made huge improvements to my writing in my College Credit Plus English 1100 class. In order to succeed in much more difficult college classes, I was able to utilize the Columbus State class that served as a bridge between a high school level class and a college course. After listening to peer and teacher reviews on my first couple papers,...show more content... For a student to make real improvements and know what to expect out of college courses, they have to act on a teacher's guidance. Through looking back at graded papers, listening to peer reviews and using resources, I was able to utilize my last semester of highschool English and advance weak areas on my writing. Through extended self–review of my writing and outside resources like paperrater.com, I have cut down on diction errors in my papers. For punctuation errors, refreshing my memory on rules for quotations, learning from past mistakes on papers and peer review has resulted in better grades and less deductions. Less punctuation faults has also enhanced my writing voice, as the reader is able to better understand the ideas I am trying to portray. These changes have not only benefited my writing for Columbus State English 1100. I have noticed that I am more careful of using correct diction in everyday conversations, texts and online communication. This will potentially prevent me from looking like a fool in front of friends and family. Most importantly though, noticing and making improvements to my weaknesses has helped prepare me for the challenging college classes I will have next ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  7. Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe's Writing Style Essay A virtuoso of suspense and horror, Edgar Allan Poe is known for his Gothic writing style. His style is created through his use of punctuation, sentence structure, word choice, tone, and figurative language. Punctuation–wise; dashes, exclamation marks, semicolons, and commas are a favorite of Poe. His sentences vary greatly; their structures are influenced by punctuation. Much of his word choice set the tone of his works. Figurative language colors his writings with description. Such is observed in the similarities between two of his most well–known short stories, "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Tell–Tale Heart" To begin with, Poe valued punctuation in its ability to make a point. Proper use of punctuation allowed the reader to feel the...show more content... Just as the choppiness caused by punctuation build suspense, so does short sentences. In "The Cask of Amontillado", the climax builds in "Then I heard the furious rattling of the chain. The noise lasted for several minutes" as Fortunato's drunkenness begins to wear off. Readers wonder whether or not Montresor's revenge would be successful. Poe utilizes punctuation and sentence structure to make an impression. In addition, one of the greatest distinctions in Poe's technique is his choice of "dark" words, which add to the genre of his stories. In both "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado", these words portray madness, death, fury, and murder to create fear. For example, when the narrator explains how the old man's efforts to imagine his fears causeless to be in vain, he says, "All in vain; because Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him and enveloped the victim. And it was the mournful influence of the unperceived shadow that caused him to feel– although he neither saw nor heard–to feel the presence of my head within the room" The usage of such disturbing words like "vain", "Death", "stalked", "mournful", ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  8. Beowulf Punctuation An interesting element of literature is that any given person can have a plausible interpretation about the meaning of the text. The following articles exemplify this concept of multiple interpretations; the scholarship looks at multiple ways to interpret Beowulf, which is an Old English epic poem. "Making Beowulf Scream: Exclamation and the Punctuation of Old English Poetry" discusses the differences in punctuation between Old English and Modern English, and how these differences can create interpretive dilemmas for scholars. The main concern Eric Weiskott raises is that modern punctuation was not used in the period that Beowulf was written, and adding our punctuation rules could potentially change the meaning of the text. In "The Evil Behind the Mask: Grendel's Pop Culture Evolution," three different interpretations of Grendel show how he has evolved over time and how he adapts to fit the audience's desires and needs at that time. All three interpretations share the general characteristics of Grendel, who is portrayed as a violent, angry, and isolated being, but they are also starkly different from each other. These differences make the readers view Grendel in various manners, which is crucial to the reaction to the overall reading of the text. However, not all interpretations are valid. For example, "The Cinematic Sexualizing of Beowulf" discusses how filmmakers have falsely interpreted the poem to revolve around sexual tensions, and have unfortunately allowed sex to ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  9. The Importance Of Punctuation In Writing Writing has always been a challenge for me. This is well evidenced by reading papers I wrote as recently as this past August. Concepts such as flow, content, vocabulary, structure, organization, grammar, and tone appear simple enough to capture on paper; I have learned over the past few months, however, that appearances can be misleading. Writing takes planning, creativity, commitment, and for me, a great deal of revising. I cannot pretend any mastery of these tasks. However, I have made progress. I spent extensive time improving my vocabulary, building better organizational skills, strengthening my use of grammar, and studying proper use of punctuation. Punctuation is one area I will address. It has both a logistical purpose and an expressive one. I tried to understand and improve my writing by studying not only proper use of punctuation, but also how to use punctuation to enhance the feeling and tone of my writing. Being a theatre and show coir performer, I look for tools to convey feeling and emotion to others. Punctuation has been added to my toolbox. As I write straight plays and monologues, I now use punctuation more effectively to express characters' views and thoughts. When reviewing dependent and independent phrases and compound and complex sentences, I began to understand one of the most underutilized and incorrectly used bits of punctuation; the semicolon had found its' way to my toolbox. I believe of all the punctuation I improved during this course, the ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  11. Lewis Thomas Overusing Punctuation Marks Despite its unconventional presentation, this essay provides quite a bit of valuable information about punctuation. It expresses the different emotions and impressions associated with the use of various punctuation marks in writing. For example, the beginning of the essay defines question marks and exclamation points as "indicators of tone" rather than stops. This means that they convey an attitude instead of just ending a sentence, which makes sense when one considers how these types of sentences are read aloud. Later in the essay, author Lewis Thomas warns readers of the risk of overusing quotation marks. He states that while quotation marks are important for genuine quotes, their presence is not necessary when writing cliches or in advertising ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  15. Does Punctuation In Text Messages Matter Analysis War of the Words In the article, "Does Punctuation in Text Messages Matter?", by Shannon Doyne, proclaims that the way people use punctuation in texting and emails is harming people and the world. Her views of how proper punctuation is important is strongly disagreeable because it matters more on what the message means rather than the punctuation. Shannon argues, "Recently, a friend I had dinner plans with sent a text to ask 'what time' ... And yet the question... felt indifferent, almost cold. Couldn't she at least bother to insert the necessary character?"(Shannon) Most people would have no problem with the text because it is getting the message clear telling what time as in dinner. The fact that she sent "A half–dozen emails back and forth,"(Shannon) means that her friend is obviously comfortable with her conversations, not trying to be mean. Later on in the article, Shannon points out, "Instead of responding to a text with 'Can't wait!!' I'll insert a space or two before the mark 'Can't wait !!' ... Sometimes I'll make the exclamation point a parenthetical, as a kind of after thought."(Shannon) It really does not matter that...show more content... In my belief along with others have not seen one person use "h" as an insult because you interviewed one person. Shannon then uses another person as evidence stating, And unless you want to be viewed as straight–up 'geriatric,' as one friend put it, best to avoid the comma at all costs."(Shannon) Again, Shannon used one person as evidence and everyone uses commas in their texts if it is too long, not being 'geriatric.' Usage of Punctuation Marks in Academic Writing Name: Instructor: Subject Title: Date: Usage of punctuation marks in academic writing Introduction These are symbols which indicate the organisation in written language, structure and the intonation to be observed in a sentence when it is read aloud. In the written English, It has been necessary to eliminate the ambiguity existing in a sentence. For this reason, punctuation marks have been in used to bring out the intended meaning of a sentence rather than the variations that can be gotten from it. 17. Emily Dickinson's Capitalization and Punctuation The poetry of Emily Dickinson is one of the most recognizable of the 19th century. Dickinson's poetry stands out because of its unconventional use of capitalization and punctuation. Her poems contain capitalized words which are not normally capitalized. Her poems are noted for the frequent use of the dash. Literary scholars have attempted to interpret Dickinson's unconventional capitalization and punctuation. Some believe that it was merely part of Dickinson's penmanship (Weisbuch 73). They therefore edit Dickinson's poetry and publish them in standardized form. Others believe that the capitalization and punctuation were a conscious effort on Dickinson's part. These scholars notice the little nuances of Dickinson's dashes, such as whether...show more content... However, Dickinson is not consistent in her capitalization (Porter 140). She does not capitalize every single noun. As demonstrated above, the word "light" is not capitalized. Furthermore, Dickinson also capitalizes words which are not nouns, as seen in lines 4 – 6 of "He fumbles at your Soul". The word "ethereal" is an adjective, but Dickinson chooses to capitalize it. He stuns you by degrees – Prepares your brittle Nature For the Ethereal Blow The capitalized words are the key words of the poem. They add weight to the lines, tipping the balance of the poetic rhythm. The reader is invited to ponder over their meaning and significance (Miller 59). The capitalization gives Dickinson's poems concreteness and symbolism (Miller 58). The reader's attention is drawn to these capitalized words. They form an image in the reader's mind. For example, in the first example, the capitalized words are Slant, Winter, Afternoons, Heft, Cathedral, and Tunes. These words alone evoke the image of a cold and lonely day which burdens the heart like the heavy and mournful tones of an organ. Just words "Winter Afternoons" carry sensations of frigidness, bleakness, and loneliness. "Winter Afternoons" set the scene and describe the mood (Porter 141). The words "Ethereal Blow" strike the reader as an oxymoron. Ethereal implies something light, delicate, and ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  22. In the novel, "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" written by the British author Lynne Truss, the art of punctuation is the topic of the whole story and is heavily exaggerated throughout, and this is the method that the author uses to get her point across. The point is that punctuation is a vital part of our world, but some scenes left me saying, "It's just a punctuation mark!" The book also left me feeling that Lynne was very pretentious especially with scenes such as when she wrote back to a pen pal concerning her errors in spelling. For me, this was one of the memorable scenes and one of the many methods she used. Another method would have to be the humor, and I did find it dramatic with some of the scenes, which is what made it so funny to know that people actually care so much about punctuation to a point where they would beat someone up for misusing it. Another thing is that Lynne tends to put her argument onto the table in a very strong way and to me uses Pathos with her arguments to scare the audience into correctly using commas.
