  1. IonsPositively and Negativelycharged atoms START YOUR ENGINES (click here)

  2. What do you mean charge ? • Protons have a positive charge. • Electrons have a negative charge. • Their charges are OPPOSITE but equal in magnitude. This is like saying +1 and -1. • If there are an equal amount of Protons (+1) and Electrons (-1) the net charge of the atom is zero! CONTINUE

  3. How do I figure out the charge ? • Remember: Atomic Number = # of Protons • (# of Protons) – (# of Electrons) = Charge Example 13 Protons – 10 Electrons = +3 Charge And since 13 Protons is Aluminum, it has a +3 chargeAl+3 CONTINUE

  4. Ions are placed into two groups + + ANION + + – – CATION – – • “ann – eye – on” • Positive charge • ExamplesAl+3 Na+1Fe+2 Ag+1 • “cat – eye – on” • Negative charge • ExamplesCl-1 O-2 N-3 C-4 CONTINUE

  5. Helpful hint • One way to keep everything in order, we write the number of Protons next to the atomic symbol: 13Al • This lets us do some quick mental math if we see the form: 13Al+3 We can quickly determine that there are three more Protons than Electrons. CONTINUE

  6. Ionsreview questions CONTINUE

  7. An ion with a positive charge is called … ? ANION CATION THAT’S CORRECT! (CLICK TO CONTINUE)

  8. LETS REVIEW! + + ANION + + – – CATION – – • “ann – eye – on” • Positive charge • ExamplesAl+3 Na+1Fe+2 Ag+1 • “cat – eye – on” • Negative charge • ExamplesCl-1 O-2 N-3 C-4 CONTINUE

  9. What is the charge of an atom that has two more electrons than protons? -2 -1 Zero +1 +2 THAT’S CORRECT! (CLICK TO CONTINUE)

  10. LETS REVIEW! Protons are +1 Electrons are - 1 CONTINUE

  11. Which element listed below has a charge of +2? Al+3 Cl-1 Na+1 Mg+2 O-2 :-\ Ok, come on now. I know you know this. THAT’S CORRECT! (CLICK TO CONTINUE)

  12. Which one is the -2 anion? Al+3 O-2 Mg+2 Na+1 None? I’m trying to trick you… …and it worked. What…? Anion’s are positive… remember? :-p THAT’S CORRECT! (CLICK TO CONTINUE)

  13. Last question!If Fluorine (F) has 9 protons and 10 electrons, what is the correct form below? 10F-2 9F-1 10F-1 9F-2 (9 protons) – (10 electrons) = ??? THAT’S CORRECT! (CLICK TO CONTINUE)
