Industry Overview • The ICT Sector employs over 80,000 people. • Turnover in the ICT sector is almost €53 billion – one-fifth the total turnover in industry and services. • There are over 200 foreign owned ICT companies in Ireland. 8 out of the top 10 ICT companies have a substantial base in Ireland. • The indigenous software sector employs 15,000 people in approx 660 companies.

Employment Opportunities • Typically people employed in the ICT sector are graduates from the following areas: • Electronic Engineering • Computer Science • Computer Engineering • Software Engineering • Information Technology • Level 8 qualification is ideally required for a lot of the roles.

These systems play a major role in every aspect of our lives from entertainment and communications to healthcare and transport. Mobile phones, MP3 players and computerised cars are all developments which were realised by the ingenuity of computer & software engineers.

Electronic engineers create, design and develop everyday devices like the mobile phone, portable music devices and computers. Electronic engineering offers a broad range of exciting career challenges including producing new innovations and developments in telecommunications, robotics, computing hardware and power and electrical equipment.

  13. Skills & Salary Information • As well as the technical skills the following skills are also required: • Excellent communication skills • Ability to work independently • Problem solving • Teamwork • Starting salaries vary from about €27,000 - €32,000.

The power to make a difference • To attract some teenagers into the ICT sector we need to give them insight on how technology can make a difference, some examples: • Computers & Medicine (Electronic medical records and prescriptions, improved MRI machines). • Camera phones can allow deaf people to communicate with sign language. • Improved communications help relief efforts in disaster situations.
