This session focuses on forming a critical opinion of David Fincher's "Fight Club." We will analyze key elements of cinematography, micro and macro aspects, and discuss Fincher’s distinct visual style throughout the film. Key points of interest include the initial warning on the DVD, the montage over the title screen, and hidden “Easter Eggs” featuring Tyler Durden. During the first 50 minutes of the film, we will evaluate how Fincher establishes the film's twist through dialogue, narrative structure, cinematography, editing, and sound design.

Objectives • Begin to form a critical opinion of Fight Club • Analyse aspects of cinematography and micro/macro elements • Define and discuss Fincher’s visual style in this film
Things to look out for • From the moment we put the DVD in, look at the ‘Warning’ at the beginning • Look carefully at the montage playing over the title screen (where you choose the scenes) • From the start, look out for the ‘Easter Eggs’ and the intercut frames of Tyler Durden
The task • We will watch the film (first 50 minutes or so?) • I will stop periodically so you can write things down • You will work in groups to focus on a different aspect of the film
Question: • How does Fincher establish from the VERY START that the ending of the film is possible (ending = twist that Tyler is ‘all in his head’) through: • Dialogue • Narrative • Cinematography • Editing • Sound
