  2. The Holocaust • Jews were not the only people executed by the Nazis • Other ethnic groups (Slavs, Jews) and those with mental and physical handicaps were eliminated • Homosexuals, alcoholics, and criminals were included • Morally unfit

Hitler’s Goal • Create a racially pure state free of anyone considered unfit • 1933—laws were passed to exclude non-Aryans from the legal, medical, and teaching professions along with judgeships, media, and entertainment • 1935—Nuremberg Laws excluded Jews from German citizenship and forbade marriage between Jews and Aryans

Anti-Semitism • Nov. 1938—Kristallnacht (“Night of Broken Glass”)—Jewish businesses and synagogues destroyed by Nazis • 1939—Jews were encouraged to leave German territory • 1940 ReinhardHeydrich and his Einsatzgruppern were given the responsibility for the final solution in Poland • Jews from all over Europe were rounded up during WWII

  5. Why were the Nazis successful? • Persistent anti-Semitism in Europe since the Middle Ages • German writers popularized the idea of a superior German culture • Nationalists believed an act was acceptable to create a pure state. • Nazis controlled media and technology to suppress opposition.
