  1. Call to Order Pretend you are an African American that was freed by the 13th Amendment. What job are you going to get now that you are free? Where are you going to get that jobs?

  2. I. Restoring the Economy in the South • Tenant Farming • Freed slaves and poor whites pay rent to work on a section of the farm • They only get the crops that grow on their land • They pay the landlord in money or crops

  5. I. Restoring the Economy in the South C. The Freedmen’s Bureau • Set up by Lincoln to get the South back on its feet • Provided basic goods like clothes, food, fuel • Provided education, shelter, and medical care • Civil Rights Act of 1866 tried to increase its power

  6. II. The Effects of These Endeavors • Tenant farming and sharecropping left former slaves at the mercy of landowners because they could not pay rent back • The Freedman’s Bureau was criticized because it didn’t provide the land necessary for former slaves to get back on their feet

  7. Sharecropping Simulation You and your group are sharecroppers in the South after the 13th Amendment has been passed. In order to set up farms, you need to buy items from the general store. With your group, decide what you need to buy: Sickle ………………………………………..$10/piece Basket ………………………………...……..$5/piece Donkey ………………………………………$50/piece Cart……………………………………………$30/piece
