  1. Advanced Punctuationand the ADAW

  2. Demonstration of the use of advanced punctuation is VERY important on the ADAW (Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing).

  3. Students must demonstrate the ability to use advanced punctuation in order to earn a top score on the ADAW.

  4. “Advanced Punctuation” includes: (:) the colon (;) the semicolon (--) the dash

  5. Each of these three marks of punctuation has different uses. An example of a common way to use each is demonstrated in the following slides.

  6. The Colon • The colon indicates a list will follow… • Example: The Alabama Direct Assessment of Writing tests students on the following methods of discourse: narrative, expository and persuasive.

  7. The Semicolon • A use of the semicolon is to join independent clauses joined by a conjunctive adverb. • Example: Students need to make certain that they are responding to the prompt in the correct mode; however, elements of description need to be incorporated in all tested modes.

  8. The Dash • Dashes indicate an abrupt break in thought. • Example: I feel that my teachers– especially my English teacher– have adequately prepared me for the ADAW.
