Kor asked the UN to intervene when N Kor crossed the 38th parallel and attacked • What was the legacy of the war for N & S Korea? Commie N Kor became a military power but declined economically; S Kor became industrialized & prospered economically w/ help of US aid • Why did war break out between after JAP lost WWII, nationalists wanted independence, but FR wanted to regain its colony • What was the outcome of the war for France & for Vietnam? FR was defeated at Dien Bien Phu & surrendered to Ho Chi Minh. An international peace conference divided Vietnam • How did the US get involved in Vietnam? It helped set up an anti-commie gov’t in S Viet and feared it would be overthrown so it escalated military involvement • Why did the US withdraw its troops from Vietnam? It was unable to win the war and pressure at home
