Southeast Asian Nations Gain Independence • In groups of 3-4 use your book/notes to answer the following questions • What was the Bell Act? • Why did the Filipinos object to this act? • Why did they agree to sign it? • Why did the US demand a long lease on its military and naval bases in the Philippines? • Why does the Philippine constitution restrict the president to a single term in office? • What role did General Ne Win play in recent Burmese history? • What role did the National League for Democracy play in recent Burmese history? • What is the current political status of these former British Colonies? • Singapore • Malaya • Sarawak and Sabah • What factors finally forced Indonesian dictator to step down?

Southeast Asian Nations Gain Independence • What was the Bell Act? • An agreement to establish free trade between the US and Phi for 8 years followed by gradually increasing tariffs • Why did the Filipinos object to this act? • Feared US exploitation of Phil resources & environment • Why did they agree to sign it? • Could not get money for war damages until they signed the act • Why did the US demand a long lease on its military and naval bases in the Philippines? • To protect its economic and security interests in Asia • Why does the Philippine constitution restrict the president to a single term in office? • To prevent the abuse of power that occurred during the 20-year rule of Ferdinand Marcos • What role did General Ne Win play in recent Burmese history? • Set up a repressive military gov’t in 1962 • What role did the National League for Democracy play in recent Burmese history? • Won majority of seats in legislature in 1990 election that was not recognized by military gov’t • What is the current political status of these former British Colonies? • Singapore: independent city • Malaya: members of Federation of Malaysia • Sarawak and Sabah: members of Federation of Malaysia • What factors finally forced Indonesian dictator to step down? • Growing unrest over his repressive policies and crippling economic crisis

Chapter 18 VIP Heads • Take a sheet of plain white paper and fold it into 8 squares. • Go through chapter 18 of your text book and find 8 VIPs • In the middle, draw and color a bust • In the top left corner write the VIP’s name and country • In the top right corner create a speech bubble and write 2 sentences that illustrate why the person is a VIP • Write your name, date, and period in the bottom right-hand corner on the back of the paper
