Europe and Japan in Ruins • In groups of 3-4 use book/notes to describe conditions in postwar Europe and Japan • Note 3 ways war affected the land and people of Europe • Note 3 political problems postwar governments faced • Note 1 way the Allies dealt with the Holocaust • Note 2 effects of Allied bombing raids on Japan • Note 3 ways US occupation changed Japan • Note 3 provisions in Japan’s new constitution • Each group will present their findings to the rest of the class. Make sure that everyone in your groups participates.

Europe and Japan in Ruins • Note 3 ways war affected the land and people of Europe Destroyed cities, factories, farmland and utilities; ruined economy, food and supply shortages, famine, disease; unemployment & destroyed lives • Note 3 political problems postwar governments faced Displaced persons; discredited governments & lack of political leaders; fear of Communist takeovers • Note 1 way the Allies dealt with the Holocaust Put Nazis on trial for “crimes against humanity” • Note 2 effects of Allied bombing raids on Japan Destroyed cities & shattered economy; caused death of 2 million people • Note 3 ways US occupation changed Japan Government was democratized; land ownership was expanded & independent labor unions were formed; standing army was disbanded • Note 3 provisions in Japan’s new constitution 2 house parliament (Diet) elected by the people & all citizens over 20 could vote; prime minister chosen by majority of Diet as head of government; Japan forbidden to start an offensive war
