Centralized Logistics Official PROMISE Office on each campus • UMBC location: Within Graduate School • UMCP location: Within Division of Graduate Studies, Office of Recruitment, Retention, and Diversity • UMB location: Within the Medical School, Office of Student Research PROMISE: A Balanced, Holistic Approach to Graduate Education

  4. How Does it Work? PROMISE Director • Rotates between campuses • Meets with Co-PIs, Staff, and students on each campus several times/month Key: Preserves consistency of the “product and message” across campuses PROMISE: A Balanced, Holistic Approach to Graduate Education

  5. Centralized Programming • Vision from initial proposal • Plan for multi-campus implementation • Faculty/Staff feedback • Program Implementation • Student Evaluation • Modify Accordingly PROMISE: A Balanced, Holistic Approach to Graduate Education

  6. The Tri-campus Seminar Two Models 1 tri-campus program/month, all campuses attend via buses/carpools or “Core Competency” programs repeated on each campus PROMISE: A Balanced, Holistic Approach to Graduate Education

Challenges More than 700 underrepresented STEM students • All don’t attend programs • All don’t get centralized “core competency” training However … • All receive invitations for events • Many acknowledge (via letter, email) feeling “supported” even though they don’t attend PROMISE: A Balanced, Holistic Approach to Graduate Education

  8. When Students Buy-In • Enjoy multi-campus camaraderie • Desire fellow students’ participation • Acknowledge PROMISE in achievements (e.g., research, dissertations) PROMISE: A Balanced, Holistic Approach to Graduate Education
