  4. The 1950s and Britain sighs with relief after two World Wars. Conscription will end in 1959 and young men  no longer have to wear a uniform. The working class find themselves with money in their pockets, and, at the same time, there is an influx of new sounds and styles coming over from America. Enter the Teddy Boys, with their flamboyant peacocking and Edwardian drape jackets. Soon after come the Rockers, with their leather, bikes and fighting, also craving a dress style different to that of previous generations. This desire to rebel and challenge traditional social systems, coupled with an eager consumption for the new music and styles, resulted in the birth of the British Subculture.

  10. What subcultures are alike?

  11. The roots of the Teddy boy Subculture are originated in London, around the 50’s. In a short period of time it spread all around the country and began to be associated with American rock’ and roll. The young men are wearing clothes inspired from the dandies of the Edwardian period, style which was trying to be re-introduced after the 2nd World War in Britain: tapered trousers, long jackets and fancy waist coats. The name Teddy is a short version of the name Edward and it was used for the first time in 1953 in a newspaper. Although there were many other youth groups who carried out their own signature style, the Teddy boys were the only group which were able to establish and differentiate themselves as teenagers and create their own market. Despite all this, their lifestyle was pretty violent. They tended to get in fights with other popular gangs. If you’re curious about this culture I would recommend the novel: Teddy Boy by Ernest Ryman.
