  2. 1. QUOTA General IOC quota in Swimming (pool): 900 athletes Quota per NF/NOC: maximum 2 swimmers or 1 relay team per event (men & women)

  3. 2. QUALIFICATION SYSTEM Order of priority for entries Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) Relay swimmers Universality places Olympic Selection Time (OST)

  4. 2. QUALIFICATION SYSTEM Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) (correspond to the “old” A Time) At each individual event, each NF/NOC may enter a maximum of 2 athletes, who must have both achieved a OQT. If more than 2 athletes per NF/NOC have OQT in the same event, the concerned NF/NOC can choose any 2 swimmers they want to enter in that event Athletes automatically qualified

  5. 2. QUALIFICATION SYSTEM Relay Swimmers 16 teams per event (1 team per NF/NOC) Qualification: first 12 in Shanghai 2011 + 4 based on times achieved during the qualification period Each NF/NOC may enter swimmers only for relays, who must have OQT or OST for the respective stroke and event

QUALIFICATION SYSTEM Universality Places NF/NOC without swimmers with OQT and OST may enter 1 man and 1 woman Must have participated at the 14th FINA World Championships Shanghai 2011, and be invited by FINA Overall universality places: 150 (to be selected in accordance with the FINA Points Table). Athletes invited to participate

QUALIFICATION SYSTEM Olympic Selection Time (OST) (correspond to the “old” B Time) After considering entries for athletes achieving OQT, relay swimmers and universality places, athletes with OST will be invited until the 900-quota is achieved. These entry places will be allocated through the FINA Rankings for Olympic qualification. The total number of athletes will be equally distributed throughout the 26 individual events. (In case the number of swimmers in one event is not sufficient to cover the OST available places, an additional place in all events will be taken into account. Through the FINA Points Table, the missing places will then be selected.) Athletes invited to participate

QUALIFICATION TIMELINE OQT: Qualification period: March 1, 2011 – June 18, 2012 FINAinvites NF/NOC swimmers with OQT – June 20, 2012 NF/NOC notify FINA if OQT swimmers will participate – June 25, 2012 RELAY SWIMMERS: Qualification period: March 1, 2011 – June 1, 2012 FINA requests confirmation of relay teams from Shanghai to NF/NOC (including nominal entries) – April 30, 2012 NF/NOC to confirm participation of relay teams from Shanghai (including nominal entries) – May 31, 2012 FINA requests confirmation of remaining relay teams (including nominal entries) for the 16 places – June 4, 2012 FINA confirms and announces final 16 relay teams (including nominal entries) in each event – June 11, 2012

QUALIFICATION TIMELINE UNIVERSALITY PLACES: Qualification period: March 1, 2011 – June 1, 2012 FINAinvites NF/NOC universality swimmers – June 4, 2012 NF/NOC notify FINA if universality swimmers will participate – June 11, 2012 OST: Qualification period: March 1, 2011 – June 18, 2012 FINAinvites NF/NOC swimmers with OST – June 20, 2012 NF/NOC notify FINA if OST swimmers will participate – June 25, 2012 July 9, 2012 – LOCOG deadline to receive entry forms

  14. 6. STATUS OF QUALIFICATION NF/NOC can at any time check on the status of qualification, through the FINA website www.fina.org: 1. Enter in the FINA homepage at www.fina.org 2. On the upper Menu, click on “Statistics” 3. On the left Menu, click on “Swimming World Rankings” 4. Arrived to this section, NF/NOC can fine-tune their research by choosing the appropriate check-boxes. For Olympic Games purposes, click on the option “Only show times that qualify for Olympics”. Then a variety of other options is available: NF/NOC may choose to check all athletes from all Federations with OQT and OST in a given event; to check their own Swimmers in all events, and so on.

STATUS OF QUALIFICATION NF/NOC can at any time check on the status of qualification, through the FINA website www.fina.org: To facilitate even more the consultation of this information, FINA will publish a weekly pdf file with all updated information for all events/all National Federations. OQT are marked in green, while OST are marked in orange. From May 2012, an imaginary line will define the potential swimmers entitled to participate in the OG with OST.
