Adding heat and Removing Heat • Adding heat to a fluid will: • Cause the molecules to move faster, which makes them expand & create more space between them • Key word: Expands • Removing heat from a fluid will: • Cause the molecules to slow down, which makes them come in closer & remove space between them • Key word: Contracts

  4. Why YES there is a math formula! • Density = mass / volume • So if you know 2 of these, you can find the other. • Mass is there  what other equations have mass in them? SZYMANSKI STAAR TIP: you may need to use this formula to get the mass and then apply it to another formula to get the answer.

  5. Can density of a fluid change? Yes! If the temperature changes, you can expect the density of the fluid to change. Look at the data that Mrs. Szymanski has given you. With your group, determine how the density of water changes with temperature. (5 min) Starter for your observation: As __________ increases/decreases, ___________ increases/decreases

  6. Density of Water As the temperature INCREASES, the density DECREASES Directions: • Fold the paper in half • On the left: draw the water molecules if the density was high (use only 20 molecules) • On the right: draw the water molecules if the density was low (use only 20 molecules)

Density of Air Starter for your observation: As __________ increases/decreases, ___________ increases/decreases Directions: • On the back of the paper; • On the left: draw the air molecules if the density was high (use only 20 molecules) • On the right: draw the air molecules if the density was low (use only 20 molecules)

Think about it! • If you heat water up, are you making the water more dense or less dense? • Why do hot air balloons rise? • In many Northern states, the older houses have the heater vents on the floor instead of on the ceiling. Why do you think that is? • In Texas, many of the houses have the air conditioning vents on the ceiling. Why do you think that is?
