  1. External ReferencesChapter 24 Sacramento City College EDT 310 EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  2. Objectives • Define the function of external references. • Reference an existing drawing into the current drawing using the XREFcommand. • Bind external references and selected dependent objects to a drawing. • Edit external references in the current drawing. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  3. Objectives • Use externalreferences to create a multi-view layout. • Control the display of layers in viewports using the Layer Properties Manager. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  4. The XREF Command EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  5. The XREF Command • A design firm has a team of designers. • Architect. • Mechanical. • Electrical. • Civil. • Structural. • Landscape. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  6. The XREF Command • Each member of the team must have access to the building information and drawings that are prepared by the architect. • Building floor plan • Site plan. • Etc. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  7. The XREF Command • The team could share information like this: • Architect prepares work. • Architect WBLOCKS information to FIVEdiskettes and distributesthe diskettes to the project team. • Each team member would have a copy of the architect’s work and could INSERT the information into their own drawing files. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  8. Original Distribution Electrical Mechanical Architect Landscape Structural Civil EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  9. The XREF Command • Everyone is happy. • Each has a copy of the architect’s work. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  10. The XREF Command • The architect then goes to a progress meeting with the client. • The client wants many changes made to the building floor plan. • The architect complies and makes changes to his drawing. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  11. The XREF Command • The architect then changes the shape of the floor plan, because project requirements change. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  12. The XREF Command • BUT, to give the changes to the team, the entire process must be repeated. • WBLOCK floor plan to diskette. • Distribute diskette to team members. • Team members delete old BLOCKS • Team members INSERT new revised BLOCKS. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  13. Revised Distribution #1 Electrical Mechanical Architect Landscape Structural Civil EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  14. The XREF Command • Everyone is once again happy. • They work on their plans using WBLOCK copies of the architect’s work. • However… EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  15. The XREF Command • The architect once again, goes to a progress meeting with the client. • Again, changes are requested by the client. • So… EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  16. The XREF Command • A week later, the architect AGAIN changes the shape of the floor plan. • The entire process must be repeated a THIRD TIME (!) • WBLOCK to diskette. • Distribute diskette to team members. • Team members delete old BLOCKS • Team members INSERT new revised BLOCKS. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  17. Revised Distribution #2 Electrical Mechanical Architect Landscape Structural Civil EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  18. The XREF Command • Clearly, an easier method must be found to distribute information to team members. • The XREF ability of AutoCAD is the “easier” method. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  19. The XREF Command • You can reference, one or more existing drawings into the current drawing without adding them to the contents of the current file. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  20. The XREF Command • XREFs are notadded to the current drawing. • The drawing is just displayed on screen. • The architect’s MOST CURRENT version can be displayed on EVERYONE’s screen ! • This makes for • Much smaller files. • Increased accuracy (information is latest). EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  21. The XREF Command • The XREF is “linked” or “attached” to your master file. • The linked information is NOT part of your drawing. • You just see the information as a “picture” or “link”. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  22. The XREF Command • Several people can reference the same drawing file. • Mechanical engineer • Electrical engineer • Civil engineer. • Any revisions to the referenced drawing will be displayed in any drawing where it is used. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  23. The XREF Command • Think of an XREF as just a “picture” being displayed behind your current drawing. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  27. Benefits of External References EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  28. Benefits of External References • The “Master Drawing” is the drawing to which that you have attached XREF files. • The “Master Drawing” is YOUR drawing. • The “XREF Drawing is your teammate’s dwg. • Remember YOU are the MASTER of your own fate. (Master drawing belongs to you). EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  29. Benefits of External References • 1. Whenever the Master Drawing is opened, the latestversions of the attached XREF’ed files are displayed. • You see your teammate’s latest revisions. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  30. Benefits of External References • 2. XREF’s are automatically updated • AutoCAD reloads each XREF whenever the Master Drawing is loaded. • AutoCAD updates each XREF before plotting the Master Drawing. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  31. Benefits of External References • 3. You can also “Force an XREF update” at any time. • Architect makes changes. • Calls teammates • Teammates do a RELOAD of the XREF file. • Teammates see the latest changes ! EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  32. Benefits of External References • 4. XREFS can be nested. • “A picture inside a picture.” Master File 1 EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  33. Benefits of External References • 5. You can use as many XREFS as needed for any drawing. • A detail referenced to the Master Drawing can be composed of smaller details that are themselves XREFS. Master Drawing File Detail Library on File Server 3 Detail 1 2 1 EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  34. Benefits of External References • 5. You can use as many XREFS as needed for any drawing. • ONE CORRECT copy is stored on the server. • Avoids duplication of details that could be wrong. Master Drawing File Detail Library on File Server 3 Detail 1 2 1 EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  35. Benefits of External References • 6. Multiple XREFS can be attached to your drawing. Civil Sheet Master Drawing File Architectural Sheet 3 2 1 Mechanical Sheet EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  36. Benefits of External References • All referenced drawings can be set to update automatically when your masterdrawing when it is opened. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  43. Attaching an External Reference to the Current Drawing EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  44. Attaching an External Reference • The XREF command functions very similar to the INSERT command. • A Referenced Drawing that is “XREF’d” into the current drawing is said to be “attached”. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References

  45. Attaching an External Reference • Enter the XREF command from • The INSERTpull-down menu. • Typing “XREF” or “XR” at the Command: prompt. • Selecting the “External Reference” button on the INSERT toolbar. EDT 310 - Chapter 24 - External References
