  1. What do you think you are going to be reading about today? Big clue! You have 2 minutes to discuss this with your shoulder partner. Remember to give a reason for your idea.

  2. Bramble Jelly! • (Were you right?) • Makes 3 jars • Preparation 0 minutes • Cooking 40 minutes • Cooling 2 hours

  3. Instructions • Ingredients 500g brambles • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • ½ cup water • 450g sugar • 2 tablespoons apple pectin • Method (Note: This recipe uses an 800W microwave – adjust times accordingly) • Put the blackberries, lemon juice and water into a microwavable bowl – a pyrex dish is ideal –do not put anything metal in a microwave. • Cover and microwave on full power for 10 minutes. • Stir the mixture, and cook without covering for another 5 minutes on full power. • Strain through a sieve, discard the pips and pulp. * Warning – HOT! * • Put the sugar and 600ml of the blackberry juice back into the bowl. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. • Uncover, stir and cook on medium power for 10 minutes, stopping to stir after 5 minutes. • Now add the apple pectin, stir in well. • Leaving uncovered, stir and cook on full power for 5 minutes, then do a 'setting test' • (put a spoonful onto a cold saucer, leave for a few minutes, and see if it is setting – getting hard). • Repeat, until you see it setting. • Wait a couple of hours and put into jars. Do not put into jars until it is quite cold. • You will have lovely jelly to spread on your bread or toast over the winter months.

  4. Are there any words you don’t understand? • Talk about the words in your trio. Note them down on a white board. Have a guess, check with a dictionary and share your words with the class at reporting time.

  5. Can you find ? • How many jars does it make? • How much sugar do you need? • Why do you have to be careful? • For how long do you have to cook the juice before adding the apple pectin? • How long do you have to wait before putting it into jars?

  6. Did you notice how the information was set out? Was it : • A story? • A poem? • A play? • A report? • A poster? • Instructions?

  7. Mais oui! Instructions!

  8. Now try this: Discuss, and think of a question for the class to find the answer to. You have 3 minutes, starting . . . NOW !

  9. Did you work well in your trio? Bon appetit ! Au revoir !
