  1. Chapter 6 Lesson 1; Algebraic Fractions

  2. “If we did all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. “ -- Thomas Edison

  3. To simplify algebraic fractions Objective

  4. Simplify: When the numerator and denominator of an algebraic fraction have no common factor other than 1 and -1, the fraction is said to be in simplest form. To simplify a fraction, first factor the numerator and denominator. Then cancel out what you can. Restrict the variables. Example 1

  5. Simplify: Restrict the variables?? x≠ -1/2 x≠ -3 Example 2

  6. Simplify: Restrict the variables?? x≠ 1 x≠ -2 Example 3

  7. Solve for x: • Collect all terms with “x” on one side and all other terms on the other side. • Factor both sides • Divide both sides by the coefficient of “x” • x= a+b (a≠b) Example 4

  8. Simplify. Give any restrictions on the variable. Which is not a restriction on the variable? • -2/3 • 2/3 • -3/2 Try it…

  9. Pg. 249; 1-25 (odd) Homework
