  2. Toussaint L’Ouverture Country: Haiti/St. Domingue Former slave Led revolt against French colonizers Skilled general and diplomat Eventually seized by the French and sent to prison Replaced by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who led Haiti to its independence

  3. Simon Bolivar Venezuelan Creole Led a volunteer army in gaining independence for Venezuela Worked with Jose de San Martin to declare independence for all of Spain’s Latin American colonies

  4. Jose de San Martin Creole from Argentina, which declared independence in 1861 Led the fight for freedom in Chile Worked with Simon Bolivar to free all of Spain’s Latin American colonies
