  1. Control System OverviewHamid ShoaeeLCLS Control System Manager • Outline • Injector control system installation & commissioning • Status update • 2007 Installation plans and status • Next 6 months look ahead • Summary

  2. LCLS Control System is at WBS Level 3 John Galayda – Project Director M. Reichanadter – Deputy Proj.Director ----------------------------------------------------- G. Pile – ANL Project Director R. Bionta – LLNL Project Director e-Beam Conventional Facilities Photon-Beam Control System 1.5 X-Ray ODT 1.4 Undulator 1.2 Injector 1.3 LINAC 1.6 End Station 1.2.2 Injector Controls1.3.2 Linac Controls1.4.2 Undulator Controls There are Controls Components in every WBS Level 2

  3. LCLS Control System has larger scope than typical accelerator controls • The scope extends from connection to beam line components, to control room operation • Cable plant, racks, wiring, termination • Global systems • Magnet power supplies and control • Vacuum • Timing • Networks, Servers, Control Room upgrades • Safety systems • Personnel Protection • Machine Protection • Beam Containment

  4. LCLS Control System Scope… • Beam Instrumentation & Diagnostics • BPM • Profile monitors and other beam imaging systems • Toroid charge monitors • Wire scanners • Bunch Length Monitor • High level applications software, physics modeling, feedback systems • Support for X-ray end station controls

  5. LCLS Controls Group Staffing • The control system development is performed by a matrixed group of about 50 engineers and technicians organized in two dozen teams • Each team manages the full product lifecycle from specification and design to engineering, production, installation and commissioning • LCLS Controls Group is now fully integrated & matrixed within the SLAC Controls Department • To manage the proliferating use of EPICS for LCLS, we recently hired Ernest Williams from SNS

  6. LCLS Controls is matrixed within the Controls Department

  7. Accomplishments in the past eight months • Installation and commissioning of the Injector Control System • Completion of the design and detailed plans for 2007 linac controls installation • Coordination and re-planning of undulator control with ANL • Development of the Undulator Control Module by ANL • Development of X-Band Cavity BPM, receiver and data acquisition system by ANL and SLAC • Design of next generation applications software

  8. The main focus in the past eight months has been the installation and commissioning of the injector Controls • Installation of the cable plant including trays, long haul DC and I&C cables, terminations, etc. • Phase 1 (Apr. ’06 thru Jun. ’06) • Phase II (Aug. ’06 thru Dec. ’06, including Christmas holidays) • Installation of the electronics racks, loading of crates, electronics chassis, modules, and intra-rack wiring • Installation of the Controls software on the front-end computers (IOC) and production servers

  9. Main Control Center is in full operation

  10. All LCLS Injector Safety Systems were Operational on Schedule • Laser Safety System (LSS) • Was needed early to allow laser commissioning • Personnel Protection System (PPS) • Passed many reviews by internal and external reviewers, citizens committees • This is the FIRST instance of a modern programmable PPS at SLAC and is fully operational • Beam Containment System (BCS) • Prevents radiation from ‘escaping’ the shielding enclosure • Protection of safety-critical collimators and stoppers • Machine Protection System (MPS) • Adding new signals and devices for LCLS • Pockels cell and MPS mechanical shutter limit laser rate on cathode

  14. R. AkreD. Kotturi Injector LLRF Work Completed • Sector 20 RF distribution system - • Phase and Amplitude Controllers & Detectors • LLRF Control and Monitor System • 1 kW Solid State S-Band Amplifiers • Phase & Amplitude detectors – Gun, L0A, L0B, L1S • Beam Phase Cavity • Pill box cavity with 2 probes and 4 tuners

  15. Injection Laser Control System • The injector laser stabilization system includes two feedback loops • Loop 1 stabilizes laser traveling through a 10-meter tube • Loop 2 adjusts the laser position on the cathode. • The digitized laser images are process by a computer which calculates position errors and applies corrections

  16. A suite of Control Room Applications Software is available for physicists & operators • Configuration management (save & restore) • Alarm management • Error Logs • Data archiving • Correlations plot • Buffeted acquisition • Online model • Problem reporting and tracking • Operations and Physics electronic log books

  20. Linac & BC2 Controls installation benefit greatly from BC1 experience • BC2 Controls is similar in scope to BC1 • We are past the engineering learning curve • There is very little engineering development • Almost all procurement is complete • The biggest challenge is the schedule • The scope includes • Extending the new timing system • Safety systems (MPS, BCS) • Adding new magnets including pulsed horizontal dipole magnet • Adding BPM, x-collimator, OTR screen

  21. Linac & BC2 Controls Installation Schedule Controls ready 12/3/2007

  22. Plans for the Next Eight Months • Linac & BC2 Controls installation • LTU & Undulator Controls installation • Complete the designs and documentation • Process procurements including installation contract • Start the installation process • Complete the hand off of cavity BPM and undulator controls from ANL

  23. Impact of Continuing Resolution • The original plans for BC2 and Linac installation called for October ’06 start of the procurement process including • Magnet power supplies • Magnet control system • I&C electronics modules • I&C racks, crates, front-end computers, etc. • Actual procurement started March ’07 • We are just starting to receive and process the equipment for installation • An additional $970k of labor cost is required to meet the December controls readiness deadline

  24. Conclusions • The injector & BC1 control system is online & operational • It has taken heroic effort by Controls group to meet the commissioning deadline • The plans are in place for linac & BC2 installation • The major risk for the above items is schedule rather than technical complexity • detailed plans are in place for the undulator control in collaboration with ANL
