Density. The thick of it. What is density?. Simply: The amount of matter in a given amount of volume. Amount of matter. The amount of matter = the mass Determined with a scale or balance. Weight and mass. Mass = A measure of the amount of matter.

  2. What is density? • Simply: • The amount of matter in a given amount of volume.

  3. Amount of matter • The amount of matter = the mass • Determined with a scale or balance

  4. Weight and mass • Mass = A measure of the amount of matter. • Weight = A measure of an amount of matter and also the effect of the gravitational pull on that matter.

  5. Volume • The space an object takes up • 2 ways to measure • Length x width x height • Displacement

  6. Direct measurement • Length x width x height • 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 = 23 • cm x cm x cm = cm3

  7. Displacement • For irregular shaped objects • The difference between the liquid volume with the object and the liquid volume without the object • Volume after – volume before = object volume When you see “difference,” you should think “subtraction!”

  8. Graduated Cylinder • Reading a graduated cylinder • Read the bottom of the curve • The meniscus

  9. Density • The amount of matter in a given amount of volume. • Density = Matter/volume • Example: • 3g/8mL = .375
