  3. A. Three factors of Imperialism* • Economic competition among industrial nations a. Need for raw material b. new markets for their products (people to sell it to). c. America selling more than it was buying; increase trade/reduce tariffs * Not all Americans believed in imperialism

  4. 2. Political and Militarycompetition • Strong navy and strategic locations for refueling (pacific islands) • Adm. Alfred Mahan wanted military expansion to protect our interests

  5. 3. Racial Superiority • Anglo-Saxonism: English-speaking nations had superior character, ideas, and systems of gov’t • Manifest destiny

  6. B. Why European Expansion? • Investment opportunities had slowed due to European infrastructure already developed

  7. C. Matthew C. Perry and Japan (1853) • American businessmen want to trade with Japan • Perry convinces Japan to trade with the U.S. • Japan impressed by ships/technology/weapons and unable to compete with U.S. = • Open trade and Japan adopts western technology and has their own industrial revolution • By 1890, Japan has it’s own empire.

  8. US needed a pit stop to Asia/refuel • Americans owned sugar plantations • Hawaii allowed for construction of Pearl Harbor. • McKinley Tariff (1890)=taxes sugar on US sugar plantation owners • Queen Lil: • “Hawaii for Hawaiians” • dethroned by planters supported by marines • replaced w/ Sanford Dole • 1898: Hawaii formally an American territory

Pan-American Conference: Latin America & the U.S. • Increase the sale of American goods in LA • Worked towards peace and increase trade between US and LA countries by lowering tariffs • Ulterior motive: Keep Europeans out of the Western Hemisphere = Monroe Doctrine • LA countries created Organization of American States- promotes cooperation between countries in W.Hem.
