The Beginning of the Renaissance • The Renaissance began in Italy in the 1300s.
The Rennaissance • Italian city-states displayed their wealth by giving financial support to artists who created works with classical themes • Leonardo Da Vinci, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael
Renaissance Art • Leonardo Da Vinci was known as the “Renaissance Man” because he was well versed in a variety of subject areas

Renaissance Art • Michelangelo is known for painting the Sistine Chapel. This is one of the greatest examples of Renaissance art.
Humanism • Humanism was intellectual movement that studied classical cultures to increase understanding of their own times • Pertrach- father of humanism • Thomas Moore- Utopia • Erasumus – Praise of Folly
Niccolò Machiavelli • A Political Thinker wrote The Prince • The Prince asks whether is it better for a ruler to be feared and not loved • Rather than discuss high ideals, he stressed that the ends justify the means.

The Protestant Reformation • As the lifestyle of the clergy become increasingly extravagant, they begin to sell indulgences.
The Protestant Reformation • Angered by the sale of indulgences, Martin Luther will write the 95 Theses. • Luther rejected the authority of Rome. • He will start a revolt against the Church My salvation was possible through faith alone led me to challenge the church.
The Protestant Reformation • John Calvin will be another reformer. • He preached the idea of predestination, the idea that God had determined who would gain salvation. • Calvinist believed the world only had saints and sinners.
The English Reformation • The break with the Catholic Church in England is caused by Henry VIII. • The Pope refused to annul the marriage so Henry splits from the Church and forms the Church of England.
