  1. Renaissance and Reformation

  2. Big Picture Questions – THE BRIDGE As we study these social, cultural, and religious changes, remember that all those political and economic changes were happening at the same time. Ask yourself: Which influenced which? For example, did Renaissance ideas create the desire to explore or did the new experiences of exploration spur the Renaissance? What was the impact of the new merchant class on European society? How did the Protestant Reformation influence the fervor to convert Native Americans? Last semester most of the topics we covered related to political and economic changes of the 15th – 17th C. This new unit will cover the same time period but will focus on the significant social, cultural, and religious changes.

  3. Big Picture Questions – THE BRIDGE Keep in mind that our main focus for the year is modernity: what does it mean for a culture, a country, a civilization to call itself modern? The Renaissance and the Reformation were exclusive to Europe, not worldwide events; but they represent Europe’s first steps towards modernity. Later, due to the dominance of the West, it is Europe’s idea of modernity that defines the concept for the entire world. • As I’ve asked you to consider before… as you learn the steps Europe took in its modernity, consider: • Are these the steps that all nations must take to become modern? Is the Western way the only right way?

  4. Big Picture Questions • How did the philosophical spirit of the Renaissance change European society? • How were those changes (see above) linked to the political and economic changes of the era? • How do the ideas of the Renaissance link to the Protestant Reformation? • How did the concepts of knowledge and education change during the Renaissance/Reformation? What effect did the printing press have? • Was the violence of the Reformation/Counter-Reformation a necessary evil? Are some things worth fighting for? • How are the ideas of the Renaissance and Reformation reflected in the values of modern global society?
