  2. WHO WERE THE PERPETRATORS? • The main perpetrator was Adolf Hitler, Adolf Eichmann, Heinrich Himmler and the whole Nazi party

  3. WHO WERE THE VICTIMS? • Slavs in eastern Europe • Soviet POWs • Poles - Serbs • Jehovah's witnesses • Jewish people • Romani people (gypsies) • Homosexuals • People with disabilities

BACKGROUND INFO • Jews were mainly targeted, because Hitler wanted to create an Aryan race. • Aryan race- pure blooded, blonde-haired and blue-eyed Germanic people. • He targeted Jews and other "Undesirables", because of his dream of having a German empire purified of other ethnic groups. • The planned extermination was called the "Final Solution"; the S.S. (elite part of German military) put in charge

  6. WHAT HAPPENED? • People were exterminated through; • Mass shootings • Gas exterminations • Starvation • Malnutrition • Beatings and torture, working to death • Cruel experiments

  7. WHAT CAUSED IT TO END? • Troops from the Soviet Union and the U.S. discovered the concentration and death camps, liberating all the prisoners still alive. • They also took many S.S. In charge of the camps, as well as German citizens from surrounding towns and forced them to bury the dead in the camps. • There were occasions in which Allied soldiers shot the S.S. Camp operators or allowed the prisoners to get their revenge.

  8. DEATHS • Estimated 11 million to 17 million people were killed but there could be many more unrecorded. • 5.9 million Jews • 2-3 million soviet POWs • 1.8-2 million native Poles • 0.2-1.5 million Romani people • 200,000-250,000 disabled people
