Why the need for this evening? • Getting in to 6th form is the start of a long and hard journey • Higher education and employment are not a right, but a privilege that has to be worked towards • The point of this evening is to ensure every student gets the most out of their time at Emmbrook and gives themselves the best chance of achieving whatever they want to do next.

Aims: • To ensure every student understands the way in which 6th form works • To ensure every student understands what is required of them to realise their potential • To ensure all parents are aware of what the school is doing with their son/daughter • To help inform parents of the way in which they can support their son/daughter

  7. The Emmbrook Sixth Form Exam Results GCSE – 75% A* - C (National Av. 68%). A Level – 2007 - 2010 – 15th percentile “Excellent Performance” ALPS Still Wokingham’s highest achieving Sixth Form School 2006-2010

  8. The Emmbrook Sixth Form Pupil Success in the Sixth Form Based upon the 3 way partnership Home School If all three partners involved in the post 16 process maximise efforts, potential has a much greater chance of being met

  9. The Emmbrook Sixth Form Student / Sixth Form Agreement - please read 8.25am for lesson 1. If no lesson 1, then sign in – but all in school College time is compulsory ISP – individual study periods – students have less ‘free periods’ and more subject time Community service – praised by Ofsted as being pivotal in the maturing of our students

  14. The Emmbrook Sixth Form Academic Monitoring How does it work? Based on performance data v target grade (TMG) Based on dialogue with tutor data from subject areas intervention from subject areas via the ‘at risk’ list

The Emmbrook Sixth FormKey dates AutumnTerm 2009 (First 10 weeks crucial) Yesterday – enrolment, timetables – start of AS Tonight – crucial launch of the 3 way partnership 20th October – parent/tutor meeting (4.30 onwards) – meet the tutor and discuss monitoring grades (available on evening) 7th December – Parents evening – meet subject teachers, discuss progress and advice for winter exams

  16. The Emmbrook Sixth FormKey dates Spring Term 2011 January AS Modules begin Early March: AS Module Results AS Re - sit decisions Late March - Higher Education Conference at Reading University 25th March – extended monitoring released – grades and advice for summer exams

The Emmbrook Sixth FormKey dates Summer Term 2011 Fri 13th Mat – AS Study leave begins End of May: AS Exams & re sit AS Exams Higher ed / career focus session June & July: Start A2 modules – Important Students consider University or Employment Options and complete UCAS Personal Statement 11th August: AS Results and ‘clinics’ - Inform progress into Year 13*

  18. The Emmbrook Sixth Form How can students help themselves? Do the simple stuff well….. Extension tasks Departmental Handbooks Learn Specification (syllabus in old speak) from Exam Board website Make revision notes early!!! - Student/ parent task!! Use of VLE, email and the internet

  19. The Emmbrook Sixth Form How can Parents Help? Take an interest Know what they are doing Help test them Encourage organisation

  20. The Emmbrook Sixth Form How can Parents Help? Get Students to read a broadsheet/ magazine of interest Look out for relevant articles, TV etc Talk about the future www.ucas.com, connexions (while it still exists (http://www.connexions-berkshire.org.uk/pages.php?id=95) Let tutor know of any problems Reward them!!

  22. The Emmbrook Sixth Form Paid Work Benefits Threats Ideally 1 day / week Don’t be taken advantage of!!! Sixth Form is the full time job!

  23. To conclude • Very exciting time • Very easy to ‘get wrong’ • Required dedication from all interested ‘groups’ (us and them!) • Communication is key • Emmbrook proven track record of maximising potential
