  5. WHMIS stands for: WorkplaceHazardousMaterialsInformationSystem

  6. WHMIS SYMBOLS • WHMIS symbols were developed to standardize the labeling of dangerous materials used in all workplaces, including schools

  7. COMPRESSED GAS • product held under pressure • do NOT puncture or store it near a heat source • examples: • propane canisters • oxygen tanks • helium tanks

  8. FLAMMABLE/COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL • products that will burn or catch fire easily • keep away from flames • examples: • acetone • magnesium • sodium

  9. OXIDIZING MATERIAL • products that promote the combustion (burning) of another material • examples: • hydrogen peroxide • potassium permanganate

  10. POISONOUS MATERIALS CAUSING OTHER TOXIC EFFECTS • products whose health effects generally appear over time following one or several exposures • examples: • Asbestos • Lead • mercury

  17. Hazardous Household Product Symbols EXPLOSIVE Explodes or gives off deadlyvapours. CORROSIVE Eats or wears away other materials. FLAMMABLE Ignites if exposed to heat or sparks. POISONOUS May cause sickness or death if swallowed.
