VOCATION Prepared By Sara Philip KV SAP Rabindranath Tagore
ABOUT THE POET • Rabindranath Tagore(7 May 1861 - 7 August 1941)sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali polymath who reshaped his region's literature and music Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. In translation his poetry was viewed as spiritual and mercurial; his seemingly mesmeric personality, flowing hair, and otherworldly dress earned him a prophet-like reputation in the West. His "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit.

THE HAWKER • A hawker is a vendor of merchandise that can be easily transported; the term is roughly synonymous with peddler or costermonger. In most places where the term is used, a hawker sells items or food that are native to the area. Whether stationary or mobile, hawkers often advertise by loud street cries or chants, and conduct banter with customers, so to attract attention and enhance sales.

There is nobody to stop him from digging. So the boy wishes to become a gardener
THE GARDENER • A gardener is someone who does work on gardens. Some people who are gardeners work only on their own gardens. Other gardeners earn money for their work by working on other people's gardens. The work they do for other people includes things like watering plants, cutting plants, and trimming grass.

The watchman swings his lantern and walks with the shadow in his side, and never once goes to bed in his life. So the boy wishes to become a watchman, chasing a shadow with his lantern
THE WATCHMAN • A Watchman is a person who is paid to protect property, assets, or people. Security guards are usually privately and formally employed civilian personnel. Security officers are generally uniformed and act to protect property by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate
SUMMARY • The poem describes a child's longing for the freedom he sees in the lives of those around him. When the gong sounds ten in the morning, he walks to his school and sees the hawker crying "Bangles, crystal bangles!" and he wishes he could be a hawker. At four in the afternoon, while coming back from school, he sees the gardener digging the ground and he wishes he were a gardener. When dusk falls his mother sends him to bed and he sees the watchman through the window and he wishes he could be a watchman.
