  15. GOD Inward out movement Human spirit communes with God and gets download, mind and emotion analyze it.  Will decides on a response and body expresses that response.

  16. Free Will in the Fall Sin did not just happen to Eve. She had to use her will to choose what evidence she uses for her decision. Sin did not just happen to Adam.  He actively chose to be passive and did not subdue the serpent and his lies. His will had to actively choose action or inaction.

  26. God gave humans the charge of tending our gardens. So lets take a look at how a plant of anger can be growing in our garden.

  27. Common questions and beliefs God gets angry, why can’t I? How is anger binding to me? I have forgiven so many times, why is it still hurting or why am I still angry? I’m not bitter or angry anymore, do I still have to forgive? As long as they do what’s right, I won’t get angry. They are the ones with the problem. If I don’t get angry, they will just keep doing it.

  28. My anger is justified (righteous anger). It’s an emotion, I can’t help it or control it. Anger management = keeping my mouth shut and be a doormat. Forgiving others makes them think that they are right and they can continue to behave that way. Dropping an issue = admitting guilt. Give it time and anger will blow over by itself. If I suppress my anger, I’m not hurting anyone. What if I am angry at God?

  29. Anatomy Growth Cycle of Anger How does one grow and multiply an “Anger Tree”?

  30. What is anger? Word associated with: Fury, rage, wrath, mad, violence, yelling, hitting, destruction, hatred, fits, irate, belligerence, vengeful.

  31. Euphemisms • Animosity • At odds • Sore • Injured • Impatient • Peeved • Cold • tiff • Passionate • Vexed • Bitter • Displeased • Exasperate • Aggressive • Resentful • antagonize Frustrated Aggravated Upset Irritated Annoyed Indignant Tried incensed

  32. Call it what it is.

  33. Anger is typically described as an emotional preservation response to violation of personal worth, needs and convictions. (A threat or a wound). But it is not just an emotion.

  34. The Seed: Trigger Phase (a threat or wound is encountered). • Violation of my personal worth. • Violation of my personal needs. • Violation of my personal convictions. • Red Alert, “I’m in danger”. Triggers stress response: Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fawn.

  35. Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn Response Fight: Stay and fight the danger (Anger) Flight: Run away (Fear/Anxiety) Freeze: Play dead and let danger blow pass (Depression) Fawn: Co-dependency. Let me serve you and join your cause.

  36. Fight or Flight Response Is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, threat to survivalin humans and animals. First described by Walter Bradford Cannon Animals reacts to threats with a general discharge of the sympathetic nervous system that primes the animal for fighting or fleeing. Adrenal Medulla produces a hormonal cascade resulting in secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline (epinephrine/norepinephrine).

  37. Effects of Adrenaline/Noradrenaline • Acceleration of heart and lung action • Inhibition of digestive system • Constriction of blood vessels to shunt blood to heart, lungs and muscles • Auditory exclusion (hearing loss) • Dilation of pupils to see with increased clarity but with tunnel vision (loss of peripheral vision)

  38. Increased blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar and fats to supply muscles with more energy. (chronic triggers sets one up for heart disease, , high blood pressure, diabetes, etc) Speeds up blood clotting function to prevent excess blood loss (can contribute to ‘stickiness of blood and strokes) Increased perspiration to prevent over-heating due to increased metabolism.

  39. The physiological response and serge of energy that one has as a result of the fight/flight response been triggered is in and of itself not a sin. All the other phases are up for scrutiny.

  40. Anger is not sinful God gets angry. Jesus got angry. Mark 3:5, Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 11:15-18; John 2:13-22. Anger in and of itself it is not sinful, but bitterness, dwelling (meditation) in anger is. Be ANGRY (orgizo: provoked , aroused to anger), and yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your ANGER (parorgismos: bitterness, exasperation, indignation, wrath). Eph4:26

  41. Activation of the Seed • Trial and Deliberation Phase • Gathering of evidence and presentation of the evidence before the court judge of me, myself and I. (Though we can hold a trial before a third party we usually have done it in our heads already.)

  42. Germination of the Seed/Development of Root The Judgment Phase • Presentation of the evidence is done. • The judge (usually of me, myself and I) render a judgment of guilt of the accused the sentence/debt owed.

  43. Sprouting Phase (the first visible sign of anger) Choice Phase: One chooses a reaction pathway to fight: • Open aggression • Passive aggression • Suppressed aggression • Digressive aggression

  44. Growth phase. • Reaction and Expression Phase: • Various modalities of “fighting” is expressed. • Reaction by the accused can cause more retaliation and provide additional evidence/nutrients

  45. Maturation Phase. Bitterness Phase: • Deepening of the wound, offense and roots due to unforgiveness or retaliation. • Greater expression of the discontent

  46. Self sustaining Fruit Bearing Phase • (Defensive Reproduction) • Inner vows • Bitter root expectancies • ‘Laws of life’

  47. Disclaimer These are illustrative understanding of anger. I will attempt to show you pitfalls and where the doors to the enemy and root issues might be. It is not meant to be exhaustive to do list but to show you the power and freedom of choice. I do not claim understand the fullness of God’s or human anger.

  48. The Seed: Trigger Phase • Violation of my personal worth. • Violation of my personal needs. • Violation of my personal convictions. • Pitfall: We assume that the world should be like us, which would be reasonable if we were all defined by God. But the world we live in now is define by self--relativism that one’s needs and convictions is different than others.
