  1. Hypothesis • Hypothesis:An educated guess • What you think will happen based on the science you know. • If I put Alka Seltzer in warm water, it will dissolve faster than room temperature water. • If I roll a large ball down a hill, it will go faster than a small ball.

  2. Independent Variable • Independent Variable: the variable you have control over, what you can choose and manipulate. It’s what you want to see the effect of. • The effect of calcium chloride crystals in a dissicator on the amount of rust of an iron nail.

  3. Dependent Variable • Dependent Variable: what you measure. The variable changes or responds to the independent variable. • The effect of temperature on mold growth on white bread.

  4. Control • the variable is what you compare the independent variable to. It is the same type of substance or condition. It may be the normal condition.

  5. Control Variable • The effect of warm water on the rate that an Alka Seltzer tablet dissolves. • The effect of diameter on the speed a ball rolls down a hill. • The effect of temperature on mold growth on white bread.

  6. Constants • Variables other than independent and responding that are kept the same so the only change is due to the independent variable.

  7. Constants • The effect of warm water on the rate that an Alka Seltzer tablet dissolves. • The effect of diameter on the speed a ball rolls down a hill. • The effect of temperature on mold growth on white bread.

  8. Trials or Replications • Doing the experiment several times to reduce errors.

  9. Materials and Methods or Procedures • Materials: the items used in the experiment • Method or Procedure: step by step instructions on how to do the experiment • All of the materials should also be in the method/procedure.

  10. Data Table • Tables: Title that includes IV and DV. • Place DV in columns and include units. Divide into Trials. Rows list IV.

  11. Change in height of Solanumlycopersicumdue to nitrogen fertilizer

  12. Graphs • Place IV on X axis and DV on Y axis • (Y to the sky).

  13. Conclusions - 3 parts • Conclusion: What happened? Write about your numbers in paragraphs to tell how the IV affected the DV compared to the control.

  14. Part 2: Evaluation 2. Evaluation: Why? Discuss the science of why the results turned out how they did. You may need to go online for more info. This is also where you discuss how your method or plan could have affected the results. • Where mistakes were made. (Sources of error.) *Never blame your equipment!

  15. Part 3: Modifications 3. Modifications: • What could you do to fix problems or improve your results next time? • What would be another IV you could test or a similar experiment that you could conduct?

  16. Design an experiment • IV • DV • Control • 3 Constants

  17. Does the wavelength of light (ROYGBIV) affect a plant’s growth? • Design an experiment • IV • DV • Control • 3 Constants • Materials • Method

  18. Does Rogain really improve hair growth? • Design an experiment • IV • DV • Control • 3 Constants • Materials • Method
