Behavior Adaptations By Ms. Angel
Essential Questions and Objectives • What are some instincts that help animals meet their needs? • What are learned behaviors? • Be able to give examples instincts that help animals meet their needs. • Be able to explain learned behaviors and give examples.
Vocabulary • Instinct- a behavior that an animal begins life with. • Migration- a movement of a group of one type of animal from one region to another and back again. • Hibernation- a period when an animal goes into a long, deep “sleep”.
Instincts • A behavior adaptation that animals are born with. • Un-learned • Ex. Dogs swimming, hibernation, migration
Migration • Migration is when animals travel long distances to meet their needs. • Many animals, such as ducks and butterflies travel south for the winter to find food and warmer climate. • Ex. Atlantic Green Turtle, Pacific Salmon, Geese, Monarch Butterflies.
Migration Cont’d. • Female Atlantic Green Sea Turtles migrate to lay their eggs. • They bury the eggs in the sand on the beach and after hatching, the young turtles swim toward Brazil. • FEMALE TURTLES DO NOT LEARN FROM OTHER TURTLES WHERE TO GO. IT IS AN INSTINCT!!!
Migration Cont’d. • Monarch Butterflies migrate south in the fall and North in the spring and summer based on their instincts.
Migration Cont’d. • Many birds migrate to environments where there is food and climate to meet their needs. • Ex. Snow Geese
Hibernation • Not all animals have the instinct to migrate as colder weather sets in and they are less capable of meeting their needs. • Instead, some adapt to these changes by hibernating. • Hibernation is a period when an animal goes into a long, deep “sleep”.
Hibernation, Cont’d. • During hibernation, the animal’s body temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate fall. • As a result, the animal needs little or no food and the energy it does need comes from stored fat in its body. • Ex. Ground squirrels, bats
Hibernation, Cont’d. • Ground squirrels prepare to hibernate by eating extra food and building a nest. • When a ground squirrel hibernates, its body temperature drops and its heart rate falls.
Learned Behaviors • Not all animal behaviors are instincts. Some are learned. • Did you know how to tie your shoes when you were born?
Learned Behaviors Cont’d. • Ex. Tiger cubs learn to hunt from their parents.
Learned Behaviors Cont’d. • Chimpanzees use sound to communicate and young chips learn how to communicate from their parents.
What did you learn? • How is an instinct different from a learned behavior? Give an example of each. • What is migration? How does migration help an animal meet its needs? Give an example. • What is hibernation? How does hibernation help an animal meet its needs? Give an example. • Suppose a dog barks when a stranger comes close to its home. Suppose it also barks when asked to speak. Which behavior is probably learned? Which is instinct? Explain your answers.
