  1. Symbols of Ancient Egypt Things you may recognize and what they represented

  2. The ankh is the symbol of eternal life. It is often being held by one of the gods dealing with the afterlife. Said to be designed after the symbolic cross of Osiris and the oval of Isis. Ankh

  3. Winged Solar Disk This is a form that the god Horus takes into battle. Horus was the god of the living and would be present at death.

  4. Flail and Crook • A symbol of royalty, majesty and dominion.

  5. Eye of Horus • This was used as a sign of healing and would be placed over incision points on a mummy. • It was also called a Wedjat.

  6. Ourorboros • While you may not recognize the name, you probably recognize the symbol. This is the symbol of totality that represented both immortality and rebirth.

  7. Scarab • This was the sign of resurrection since the female scarab (or dung beetle) would lay their eggs in the sand and when they hatched, the Egyptians believed they were coming out of nowhere.

  8. Nemyss • The traditional head-dress of the Pharaoh. • It would usually be accompanied by a beard.

  9. Djed • The Djed is a very ancient Egyptian symbol of stability. It resembles a short pillar with four horizontal, stacked platforms on top. It is a symbolic representation of the Tree that entombed the god Osiris at his death by his brother's hand.

  10. Sphinx • The Sphinx was a symbol of wisdom and protection. • With the head of a human and the body of a beast, the sphinx represented all wisdom and strength as well as the riddle of human existence.

  11. The Pyramid • The pyramid was used as a symbol of ascension. • As a certain amount of astronomical observation was involved in the building of the pyramids, in particular the precise alignment with the cardinal points, it is believed the pyramid was a representation of the world's axis, with the body of the structure symbolizing man's ascent to the heavenly skies - in particular, Pharaoh's ascension to Heaven and the Afterlife. • It has also been proposed that the pyramid may have symbolized the sloping rays of the sun as a source of eternal strength and energy. Or it could have been designed to represent the Primeval Mound of Creation on which the sun-god was said to have been born.
