  1. Luke 22:1-6 • Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

  2. Striving For “Greatness”

  3. Much Talk About Greatness • Every culture has their champion. • Every generation has their best. • Each becomes consumed with identifying the greatest. • Numbers don’t lie but do they determine everything. • Greatest what? Thinker, athlete, Christian, humanitarian, writer, painter, politician, philanthropist, fighter, poet, scientist, preacher, teacher, et.al. Most people will never fit into these discussions. Many people are turned off by talk of greatness. Greatness is often seen as prideful and contrary to Christ.

  4. Being Great or The Greatest Are Biblical Concepts • Their substance was great (much, many) (Gen. 13:6). • Job – greatest man in the east (great distinguished of men) (Job. 1:1-3). • Solomon – So I was great (to grow, become great, importance) (Ecc. 2:9). • Apostles - Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (greater, larger, elder, stronger). (Matt 18:1).

  5. The Lord Is Calm In The Midst Of The Storm • Implementing his Memorial Supper. • Preparing for his impending death. • Judas is trying to betray him. • Pharisees want to kill him. • Apostle’s concerned about the betrayal. • Also striving for position’s of power. • And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors (Luke 22:24-25).

  6. What Kind of Greatness? God Exhorts Us To Strive For Personal Greatness!

  7. Try As Hard As You Can! • Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest (Ecc 9:10). • Reason: you are going to the grave. • It’s not just one time to live. • It is one life to live one time. • US death stats 2010 • Number of deaths: 2,468,435 • Deaths per day est. 6,762 Don’t go out without a fight! Did you do the “best” you could do today?

  8. Mean It! Put Your Heart Into It! • Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men (Col. 3:17-23). (See Luke 10:27). • Reason: you are doing it for the Lord; and the Lord will reward you (v 24) • Don’t go through the motions with your life. • Mean it – do it with your heart!

  9. HEART • Heart is used in Scripture as the most comprehensive term for the authentic person. It is the part of our being where we desire, deliberate, and decide. It has been described as "the place of conscious and decisive spiritual activity," "the comprehensive term for a person as a whole; his feelings, desires, passions, thought, understanding and will," and "the center of a person. The place to which God turns." • J. Stowell, Fan The Flame, Moody, 1986, p. 13.

  10. Be Like Jesus • At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:1-4). • See (Matt. 20:28; Phil. 2:5-7)

  11. Humble Yourself • "They that know God will be humble," John Flavel has said, ' and they that know themselves cannot be proud."  • "Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself one way or the other at all." William Temple

  12. God Exhorts Us To Strive For Greatness • Let us try as hard as “we” can. • Let us put our hearts into it - for the Lord. • Let us live like Jesus– humble yourself.
